message from a friend: anyone got any idea?
I quote:

I did a job for a customer today (asian family) the remit was to move the
sky box from lounge to kitchen and move a sky plus box from a bedroom to the
newly converted garage The sky box was moved and connected , the customer
commented that channel 783 and 784 were not there , software download I
thought rechecked after and they were not on the planner, the red banner
channel unavailable (or whatever it says) popped up for both channels the
woman made a passing comment that before they had multi room installed and
the sky Plus installed the channels suddenly appeared!

so sure enough once the sky plus boxed was installed the channels suddenly
appeared on the sky box

Only thing I can equate it to is that the sky plus box is sending extra
power to the LNB to help switch to whatever polarity is needed for the sky
box????

Explain

I know the 4 outputs of a quad are not as isolated from each other as you
might think.
I used to repair digiboxes in a workshop situation, I had 2 minidishes
each fitted with a Philips quad lnb, and the 8 feeds came into the workshop.
If I connected a box up to an lnb that had one of its other feeds
already in operation, that picture would momentarily break up.
Also IIRC as long as one box had LNB power enabled, the other
three would work with LNB power switched off, but presumably
only one polarisation would have been available. Actually the 4
outputs might have worked like that in two pairs rather than across
all 4 IYSWIM its been some time since I was involved.

So it might be that the LNB was faulty, but the extra power
from the second box masked the symptoms.

Why have you put "asian family" in brackets in your thread? Does this have
a bearing on anything?

Maybe the reason they wanted asian channels?

That explains it. Didn't realise 783 / 784 were asian channels

Firstly I must say that I was quoting directly.

Secondly, the relevance was that the channels are ethnic ones that are only
of interest to Asians, so the fault (if it is channel-specific) might not be
well known.

Thirdly, I'll say just what I like in my emails. I'll decide what I want to
put, not you. If I want to mention that the family are Asian, for no reason
whatsoever that you can discern, then I will. If I want to mention that they
keep a tortoise in the garden or play the flute in the cellar I'll mention
that as well. How dare you presume to tell me what I can say on the grounds
of your prodnosed politically correct attitudes? People like you remind me
of George Orwell's thought police. Fuck off and mind your own damned
business.

Yes, well next time try to operate your brain before you allow your

I do hope they aren't keeping their tortoise outside at this time of year.
It should be in a box of straw in the garage !

I was born in the winter of 1963, so perhaps I'm the reincarnation of
your tortoise ?

Some kind of grounding issue? are alls Sky boxes double insulated?
Perhaps the unconnected feed from the LNB was picking up interference?

Possibly the use of double insulation and the lack of a definite earth
on the low voltage side could allow some strange effects when you have
two DodgyBoxes and a stray earth somewhere ? The opportunity for
electricity taking "wrong" and possibly circuitous routes with
unearthed supplies is one of the reasons why telecommunications power
and public mains supplies are required to have one pole connected to
earth. A spare fag-packet (back of) and a pencil might be required.
