HD extra cost
How long did it take for Sky to drop the £10 for Sky+?
I guess there will be a similar timescale before the HD addition is
dropped.

If it's anything like in the US then they all seem to count HD as a
premium service, and it always will be. I assume that HD will always
be counted as a premium service in the UK too.

Difference is that the soon to be launched Freesat will have HD content
for no extra charge. That'll force Sky to have a rethink.

Quite honestly it's a rip off....I thought HD (sky one, arts & sports)
channels broadcast HD programs, well they do but only sometimes,
Geographical and
Discovery most of the time but loads of repeats!
Looking at HD programs recorded awaiting viewing on my sky box, over 75% are
from BBC HD. With Ch4 now doing (mostly) films in HD and hopefully with
Ch3/5 soon to follow I will choose to save my £10.
I reckon by Easter sky will drop the £10, perhaps offering the HD box
cheaper if punters are willing to pay the £10 for a minimum period.

except that those free HD channels will be available to Sky HD box owners at
no extra cost too - in the same way that bbc hd, channel 4 hd and luxe HD
are currently available at no extra cost.

It's not at all clear whether C4HD will be on BBC/ITV Freesat. For a start the
channels is sharing one of the Sky's rented transponders, unlike C4SD that
uses a transponder rented, and uplinked to, by C4 and Arqiva (Sky are not
involved).

It took them a shameful six years, IIRC Sky+ launched in 2001/2 with TiVo
being their only competition, and the fee was reduced (for subscription
customers only) in late 2007. In the intervening period Freeview was
formed, took off in a big way, and now there are a lot of very good
Freeview PVRs with features that knock Sky+ into touch, for free. Sky
didn't really have a choice - if they did, rest assured they would NOT
have done it!

It all depends on competition, and how well Sky manage to prevent
competitors for existing and/or competing with them. It isn't a question
of time IMO.
I've never paid an extra fee for recording (I bought a 2nd-hand
lifetime-subscribed TiVo for the RRP of a TiVo at the time), and I don't
intend to pay an extra fee for HD either. (Or stereo, or RGB outputs, or
HDMI outputs, or S/PDIF outputs, or whatever else Sky think they can
charge extra for)

No, I think that is completely wrong. I only took up Sky + when the £10
subs was dropped and I have had it for quite a while now (must be at
least 2-3 years)

they dropped it 2007 for all subscribers. before that it was free if you had
2 major premium subs like movies or sports.
they still charge if you don't have any sub i.e. freesat.

Yes, I was forgetting that I had got the free Sky+ sub because I had the

No, it's completely right. The fee being waived for premium subscribers
deal managed to make enough people wrongly think that it had been
"dropped" that it became increasingly common to have to correct this.
Even now of course it hasn't been dropped. It's just waived for more
people than before. It's still in the software, still needs a viewing card
with special activation for Sky+, and could still be reversed at any time.
FTV customers still have to pay just to record BBC1 etc. Only a software
upgrade which removes the requirement for a Sky+ viewing card will show
true commitment to abolishing the fee.

Quite right. In fact, doesn't the monthly bill show a £10 Sky+ fee and then
a -£10 discount?

Don't pay it then.
Sky will charge whatever the market will stand. I bet you do the same next
time you come to sell your house. If not let me know as I might want to buy
it cheap. :-)

No! It shows Sky+ itemised but at a cost of £0.00
