ITV D-Sat Encryption
Some ITV regions have popped up on Astra 2B recently, and are now encrypted.
An interesting e-mail from ITV's Duty Office was posted on Digital Spy today:

Hi,
Out of interest any idea on the details of what is and how works, "Automatic
Entitlement".
Thanks for the post, etc.
Best wishes,

Probably just the technical term for Sky's FTV implementation - in that all
smartcards have this level of decryption enabled by default (and no
subscriber management is needed)

This indicates an extraordinary reversal of ITV's attitude to Sky, and
I'm amazed *if* they are returning to encryption.
Raises several questions:-
1: Why are they having to move some regions from 2D ? Did they lose
the space to a higher bidder, or have they other plans for 2D (ITV HD ?)
2: Does this mean that the regions moving to 2B will not be available
on Freesat boxes ?
3: What of ITV HD ? Odd to be anti-Sky over this, yet jump into bed
with them again on encryption, which coupled with regional mapping won't
be cheap.
Interesting times ahead I think ?

The "Freesat" Digitalspy forums is busy discussing all your questions!
Some ITV regions are now on 2B and *are* being encrypted with Videoguard
(this is confirmed by people with full-featured receivers!!)

The ITV Duty Office has said a "contract ending". Unlikely to be a higher
bidder as my understanding was that such contracts were of long duration.

Quite possibly!

My theory on all this is that it is somehow bound up with an (as yet secret)
deal Sky and ITV have done over ITVHD. Perhaps Sky are providing these
encryption services for free to get space freed on 2D for ITVHD.
