Sky HD Box Scart connections
Hi,

I managed to find a picture of the back of a sky hd box, I was wondering why
it has a 'TV Scart' connection? I thought all channels (sd & hd) was
supposed to be viewed via the hdmi connection.

Many thanks in advance

I guess it's for a second TV set which will more than likely still be SD.
Does the box have RF output as well?

Sky HD offers the following connection options:

HDMI - provides high definition output
Component video out
Scart (labelled TV Scart) - RGB out or Composite out (depending upon
the box settings)
Scart (labelled VCR Scart) - Composite in / out. Also allows loop
through of video output from VCR, etc.
S-Video out
Audio out (right and left)
RF1 out
RF2 out (can be enabled to carry voltage for TV-Link compatibility)

For viewing on an HD television, you would normally opt for the HDMI
connection. If the TV has sockets for component video input, I believe
you could also use component video connectors (plus separate audio
cables) - but I am not sure about this aspect.

For viewing on a non-HD television, you must choose between the
following connections. These connectors do NOT provide HD pictures
(listed in descending order of quality):

Scart (using RGB signal) - However, older televisions do not always
display RGB to best advantage
S-Video (with separate audio connection) - Not all TVs can receive
S-Video input
Scart (using Composite signal ) - all TVs with a Scart socket should be
able accept a composite video signal
RF

Re: Sky HD Box Scart connections
Hi Bob,

Thanks for the detailed response, I just thought it a waste to have a 'TV
Scart' connection AND a hdmi connection on a HD box.

Anyway, thanks for the reply.

Cheers

After getting SkyHD for my HDTV I flogged my old widescreen one and
plugged the old TV via SCART and that indeed worked, even on HD
channels, but it output the HD channels as normal RGB/PAL down SCART.

Given the price of the SkyHD box I'd expect it to have SCART sockets
on the back still, otherwise it wouldn't work via TV Link, etc.

Some HD TVs (including my Pioneer) do not automatically switch aspect ratio
(between 4x3 and 16x9) when viewing SD via HDMI. Therefore I use HDMI for HD
but SCART for SD.

TV Link uses RF2 output.

What everyone has forgotten is that to copy to an HDD or DVDR you would
need the Scart connection.

Ahh, I was thinking of something like a DigiSender which uses SCART.

Re: Sky HD Box Scart connections
Hi Malcolm,

Thanks for the reply, I was wondering if anyone was using BOTH connections
on an HD box. I'll give that a try when I order the box, I'm just waiting
to see if the price (£249+£60 installation!) drops now that freesat is
available.

Cheers

One word of warning.

On the Sky HD receiver, the lower Scart socket (the RGB scart) is very
close to the HDMI socket.

The cable on a standard Scart plug, which enters the plug from one side,
obstructs the the HDMI socket (if you want to use both connections at
the same time). Consequently, you should select the type of Scart lead
carefully - and choose one where the wire enters the plug from the rear
(not at an angle).

I am not recommending any particular retailer or brand. However, have a
look at the illustration at

the scart sockets work fine - but naturally hd channels will only output in
SD.
using the HDMI output is a better idea though - for sd channels too.
maybe they did it just for backwards compatibility - and dvd recorders etc.

i paid about 180 via ebay around a year ago - already had a dish so no
fitting needed.

I took my box apart last week, to change the PSU capacitors. It really is an
appallingly designed piece of equipment. Not one, but two cooling fans, silly
bits of plastic casing, the guts inside effectively a tin box, without any
holes (hence the fans), and as you say rear connectors that obscure each other.

Awful, and a tip for any wishing to relocate the fan, after they've fixed the
PSU, use Olive Oil on the rubber legs, they slip through like magic !
