HD recordings go sluggish
I tried to watch Battlestar Galactica on Sky HD tonight while it was
recording. As I tuned in late I rewound into the buffer but found it
extremely jerky, sound almost absent but with a few momentary bursts.
Further investigation showed that all recordings of HD programmes did
the same, whether in the planner or using the pause/rewind buffer.
Actual transmissions were OK, so were SD recordings but the menu screens
seemed sluggish.

I though "this will need a reboot but I don't want to lose the recording
in progress so I'll use multistart to see a later showing". However as
the programme started there was a loud click and the box was off loosing
the recording anyway. All was well after rebooting. Is something
wearing out already?

sometimes that reboot can be enough with sky+ boxes. If you have been
using it a long time you may find it better to clean off and format
the hard drive sometime soon. If you're lucky this could be a
temporary glitch.

I had had it full but it is about 30% free now, mostly seen but left in
case I want to re-see it. I keep a copy of the HD test card on it,
apart from that I suppose I could clear it.

I was wondering about defragmentation. There is no such command; does
the start-up routine, that takes two and a half minutes on an HD box,
actually do it?

Now this is the thing, I think it is called housekeeping, but if I am
wrong then you would lose your stuff off the drive. I was hoping
someone more up on this stuff would have chimed in by now. ah, right,
I have found a page where it tells you how, it is at the bottom of the
page, last item

Thanks for link. The last time I used that function the box failed
dismally and required two manual reboots to get it to work again.

My Sky HD box does this about once every two weeks, very annoying.
Housekeeping etc do not really help. It will start getting sluggish when
watchng a recording, then image freezes but sound continues, then CLICK and
reboot. I just checked with a friend who also has SkyHD, happens to him as
well, so my bet would be a software glitch of some sort.

I'm sure I read here or somewhere else recently that these boxes are a bit
notorious for powers supply problems. Could this be the cause of the
problems? Take a look here http://www.satcure.com/accs/page12.htm#thomson
