Neatly sidestepping the possibility of a former friend's joke, which
was that all sound engineers are deaf anyway because they spend their
lives listening to PAs which are too loud (RIP Robbie) ...
I think they think they are trying to achieve a balanced mix, just
like they would be with a modern band. My point being that it's the
conductor who should be doing that, their job is to relay as
faithfully as possible his rendering of the work, rather than try and
'mix' it in the modern meaning of the phrase.

You think all sound engineers work with PA?

Must pass that on. It's something which obviously hasn't occurred to any
sound balancer. Who, according to your ideas, all must come out of the
same box.
