Attn Mr Wright
Sorry Bill,
I get all formal at this time in a morning!
Knowing that you have an interest in such things I took a few photos of
a Sat TV rack that I came across recently while working on a PMR radio
system. From the front it looked reasonable, the rear was not so pretty
though. It looks as though they had problems with over heating and so
had added a fan. As there was no provision to get the cables in and out
they had taken them through a few spare holes in the back door, shame as
this meant that the door would no longer shut and so the fan was no
longer blowing into the rack. It isn't shown in the photos but the
cables from the rack are so short that it is almost impossible to move
it anywhere. Pity because they are not the only users of the room and
some of us need to get behind their kit to get to ours!

PS if the person that put this rack together is reading this, your fan
bearings are failing, it was making a horrendous noise.

What is a PMR radio system?

This is clearly not a domestic system! What is all that equipment
meant to do?

Private Mobile Radio, Walkie talkies to some, I have a couple of
repeater bases screwed to the wall in the room, the cabinet in the photo
had been placed so as to block access to these.

It is the TV distribution system in a VERY expensive hotel / club.
Better than it was though, it used to be 4 Sky receivers stacked one
above the other on a shelf with some pieces of wood keeping them apart
in an attempt to give some ventilation.

I don't think that confused anyone (that mattered).
What does PBR stand for? I haven't come across it before.

Private Business Radio i.e. a radio system thats owned and operated by
the user like Taxi companies and the like.

Another way of saying PMR;)..

Going out of fashion nowadays but for some applications does serve very
well:)..

In which case the phrase "a PMR radio system" is a tautology(?) since
the acronym PMR already includes the word 'radio'. More concisely it
should have been expressed as "a PMR system". Don't worry you're in good
company. A classic example is the phrase "Built on NT Technology" in the
windows 2000 startup screen. The microsoft acronym "NT" is _supposed_ to
stand for "Network Technology"[1]

[1] I emphasized the word 'supposed' since the wags in the PC trade tend
to assign alternatives such as "Nice Try" and "Not Tested", which would
actually scan better in the presence of the word 'Technology'.

That too! However, "New" very often turns old in rather short order, so
if an alternative is handy for the "New" bit of the acronym, it very
quietly becomes that in its stead (in this case, "Network" :-). Anyway,
that doesn't alter the tautological error.

Out of the alternatives, "Nice Try" is my favourite since it's clear
that that's about as close as microsoft are likely to get in creating a
robust no nonsense OS.

The overall impression I get from looking at the GUI of its "Idiot Son"
offspring (WinXP) is "Paedophile". Vista (aka "Vasti"), otoh, appears to
be aimed at people in need of adult supervision.

Not a problem for the New Forest. ('New' in William the Bastard's day and
not a forest in the modern sense, as it has very few trees.

Comments:

1. Why people buy expensive racks and then use them as shelf units I don't
know. A £17 shelf unit from B & Q would have been just as good. I mean, that
fan can't be doing any good and I bet they never shut the front door anyway.

2. At least they've used channel filter/levellers to filter/combine the sat
box outputs. But no UHF amps before the filters, so by the time the signals
hit the main amps they will be dangerously low.

3. Are those things at the bottom the multiswitches? They look like the old
Global ones that only handle H/V and don't bandswitch. Surely not.

4. It's a typical untidy 'no-pride-in-the-job' couldn't give a shit
installation.

5. It's the custom when exhibiting photographs to other members of this
forum to include a set of highly embarassing shots in another album, so
members can find them and have a good laugh at your spotty bum, etc. You
appear to have omitted this essential formality.

I'm not sure what the various items are, more your line of expertise
than mine, also I was scared of moving it too far! there were a number
of lengths of CAT5 running very tightly to a hole in the wall that were
so short the rack couldn't go too far........

The fan was crazy, it would have provided some air movement if the door
had been shut, but as the door couldn't shut it was doing bu**er all.

I must apologise about the photos, I'll slip a few suitable ones in next
time.
