Even with subtitles switched on, (as the OP suggested) ?
You need to disable the MHEG engine in your box. For those who own a
Toppy PVR running latest s/w, this can be done by switching off
'Interactive' in the set up menu.

Switching on subtitles should substitute a transparent MHEG
"screen" for the red one.

I think that's true for any PVR that directly records the MPEG programme
stream ? You don't get any 'Red Dots' on Sky+ recordings for instance.

I just found it easier to select "red" and then choose one of the
three options (one of which is the prog being transmitted on channel
81).

Oh yes. Doing it that way (the official way) gives the blue
button menu as well.
