My first Sat dish install :-)
I've never actually installed a satellite dish before, so here it is.
This is my own dish for Freesat. I do have a 'satellite finder' but
can't use it as I don't have a sat receiver yet. I've aligned it
roughly the same as the other dish in the picture (the one furthest
away). And No More Nails was not used to stick it up!

However I think you need some NMN to stick the URL of your photo to the message !

Very symmetrical.

I'm hoping that's the back of those properties? If not, unless this was a
terraced house I think I would have put it on the side.
My own dish is hidden from view by our chimney - can't say the same for the
16' aerial mast though :-)

Well done. I DIY installed a 1.2m steerable dish in 1996 and it was right
first time - set up alignment, fit dish, set limits, interpolate 19E, steer
to position, $ky News came on.

OTOH you can probably get away with trial and error on a small dish for
freesat.

It is the front of a block of four flats. Unfortunately there are
very high trees round the side & there is virtually no view to the
sky. I did ask all the other flat dwellers if they minded, and all
said it was fine. I suppose a mast on the apex would've cleared the
trees, but my ladder ain't tall enough.

Ah, okay! Sounds like you did the right thing then :-)
IMHO Installations towering on masts from the apex are to be avoided unless
essential.

The symmetry of the dish compared with next door looks quite balanced.

1. The cable should be fastened to the LNB arm in two places, one near the
LNB and one near the dish.
2. The cable should be fixed to the mount at the rear of the dish. There
should not be a loose loop.
3. When you run a cable across a wall put two clips in together at the start
of the run, then as you put each sucessive clip in apply gentle a stretching
pull to the cable so that the section fixed is taught. Your cable is loose
on the wall.
4. I think you might have assembled the wall bracket to the support arm
incorrectly. I can't really see properly but it looks as if the arm pivots
on the bracket on one bolt.

Easily fixed. Basically I copied the neighbouring dish.

Did think it look a bit wrong. It is fixed to the rear of the dish,
but there was slightly too much cable, and being lazy, I didn't trim
it down.

Ah! I did wonder how it was possible to tighten up the cable. Never
been any good with cable clips. Or a hammer to be precise.

From my memory, the wall bracket is a centre hole with a raised
centre, and a semi-circular groove round the outside. The arm is
forked and fits around the raised centre hole and bolts go in the
circular groove and through the forked arm, one on top & one in the
bottom. I'll take a closer pic when I can.

On reflection this is one of the occasions Bill could have contacted Marky P
outside of the group.
I reckon for a good honest job, despite the learning curve, Marky P would
get my vote.

Yes I agree that the job is basically OK, and exceeds the standards of many
Sky installers. But this is a newsgroup, and the idea is that we all learn
from the material discussed. Mailing Marky on the side would benefit no-one
except Marky, which would be silly because there are probably many readers
here who need the advice more than he does.

The best thing* about Marky is that he displays what he does in a totally
honest way and is big enough to invite and take criticism.

*As far as I know. I've never slept with him.

Looks pretty good for a first attempt. Miles better than most Sky dishes are

Didn't you say that you had a sat finder? Did you use that connected to
a 12-18V power supply (car battery, 10 off AA batteries etc.) ?

Never thought of that! Haven't used my sat finder yet as I thought I
needed power from a sat receiver, but I have a DTT meter that outputs
a 12v supply, so I could use that! Up the ladder I go!

It didn't work :-( The meter powered the Sat Finder when it wasn't
connected to the LNB, but nothing with LNB connected :-( Maybe my DTT
meter's supply isn't powerful enough.

It might not have the current capacity for an LNB. But try it. I didn't
mention a masthead amp psu for that reason.

Funny how that wrapped link works
without repair. Didn't recognise Martin without his bald head!

Serious comment: no fuse at the battery end of the connecting wire
Car batteries will happily provide 100A to a short circuit. At the very
least improvise a fuse by making the connection to one pole
of the battery with a single strand of flex.
Also I am surprised at his suggested technique, I would have said
set the elevation first because the beamwidth is wider in the vertical
plain and you have a scale to set it with, then swing the azimuth
to acquire the bird.

Where's part 2, Martin talks about showing us how to find the correct
satellite 'later', but where's the video ?

I wondered that too. Anyway, I used a 12v wallwart to power the sat
finder and I wasn't far out with my guesswork! Only needed a slight
knock and it was perfect. I noticed that tightening the bolts causes
the dish to go out of alignment, so I offset it first, then tightened
the bolts to bring the dish back into alignment. Just got to wait for
my telly to arrive (should be next Saturday).

I put an extra bit of tape on the boom arm too :-)

Well done. Hopfully you won't have found Hotbird or Astra 19.2
by mistake.

I wonder what would happen if the LNB had an internal short, with that car

Is there a normally current limiter in the meter ?

Arabsat.

It's a bit of a knack.

I should think so too. And pulled that cable through the clips a bit I hope,
so it's straight.

Yes. Just after it bursts into flames the current is cut off.

I'm not. My back wall faces due East and both my dishes are
mounted slightly skewed with the azimuth bolt left intentionally
lose so I can manually swing the dish to Astra 1 Astra 2 & Hotbird

Keep up at the back, I've already mentioned that.

All I can go by is my Sat Finder. According to that I have a signal.
It doesn't tell you what satellite you're on though, but looking at
the neighbours dish, it's pointing the same way.

Don't worry Marky. It's likely correct, or near
enough so ..you'll twiddle when your Panny arrives
(..cheaper than some of the 'pro' sat finder boxes)..!

If your piccies are upside down and jump about a
bit when you first switch it all on, then you're
probably getting something from Australia ..or a
reflection from Tau Centauri, or something..

Just sit on yer head ..or turn the Panny upside
down, remembering to chain it to the floor; that'll
fix things for a while...

;))

Seriously ..hope it goes well ..I'm guessing you'll
be really happy with the results when you do finally
get them :))

You may jest but...
...a few weeks ago I was attending an IT course and during an
idle moment I noticed that the graphics card on my machine had
an option for inverting the image. For a laugh I clicked it, then
got completely disorientated, and could only correct it by
turning the monitor upside down. The guys still rib my about it.
