OT: Depressing Britain???
Is it just me, or is the UK a depressing place to be nowadays? It seems the
UK is all doom and gloom and depressing all the time.
Gosh this country needs a change of leadership and a change of direction.

What stunning naivety. No matter who wins the next election we'll
still be governed by politicians. Only the glossy coating will be
different.

but - once upon a time these "politicians" governed for what they believed
to be 'the good of the county'. Now they do it for their own personal or
party benefit.

I agree. It is strange. Compared to many people is the world we are
wealthy and fortunate. But we are obsessed about how awful everything is.
Have you noticed how everything is a "crisis"? The crisis in health care,
the crisis in education. The disenfranchisement of the younger generation;
the new "under class"; the terrorist threat; the global warming crisis; the
world food crisis. And don't forget the "carnage" on the roads.
And in response to all these problems we implement a vast array of measures,
targets and objectives. We employ an army of bureaucrats who do nothing
productive whatever. And worst of all, we destroy civil liberties which
were established almost a millennium ago, thus handing victory on a plate to
the Muslim fundamentalists who want to undermine our way of life.
What an incredibly po-faced and miserable lot we are. Have you been abroad
recently? I've a friend who lives in Crete and these issues - whilst not
ignored - are NOT obsessed about with endless hand-wringing like we do here.
They are poorer than us, but for some reason they seem much more relaxed and
content than we do.
The difference is one of attitude and perception, not a difference of
reality. And for some reason we love to wallow in - frankly - feelings of
doom, gloom and self-pity.
I think it is quite fascinating, but not at all healthy. And I wish I
understood why we do it, and how we can stop.

I dunno about that. Over all you've had a pretty god run for the last 25
years. Certainly better than the previous 25 years. Sure, a graph of the
economy will show some spikes and some troughs, but the trend is decidedly
up.

And before that it was the cold war with "protect & survive".

Bizarre, isn't it? Maybe the point you make about the army of
beareaucrats who do nothing productive is the key. Therefore they
need to invent lots of problems so that they can "solve" them. Or
maybe it's the other way around - they have a "solution" so they must
manufacture a problem to match it with.

I think we need an army of psycologists for this. Personnally I think
the media have a lot to do with it.

I think the point is, you wouldn't believe so from all the doom and gloom we

Yes, indeed. The odd thing is that the more you have, the more worried
you are about losing it. Negative emotions like jealousy, greed and fear
are much better motivators (for getting people to buy newspapers) than
happiness, contentment and wellbeing.

perhaps it's because of the Euro Tournament getting underway this year
without England. A pity. If there were justice in this world England would
always get a draw (think of the advertising money FIFA won't be receiving).
