Handheld TVs after switchover?
What happens to small handheld battery powered TVs after switchover to
digital? Anyone know of any small upgrade that you can do to upgrade
these into a digital set?

You can get tiny USB dongles that turn your computer monitor into a
digital TV, so the necessary equipment for digital TV reception can
certainly be very small in size so there must be some way of adding a
digital chip inside current small battery powered TVs?

I know that digital needs more power and if I have a battery power TV
that runs off 4AA batteries and lasts for a few hours, it probably
will only last half that time to power digital, however there could
also be solutions and ways around that too.

There is definitely a market for this and doing upgrades for handheld
TVs, I think they have been ignored completely in the digital TV
revolution so far.

You buy a new digital one. Same as any TV, really.

The 'USB dongle' works in conjunction with your computer - not just the
monitor.

Does such a chip exist for ordinary TVs?

No, it would have to be a do-it-yourself job. You could try using one of the
Freeview receivers that fit into a large scart plug for example, but even
that would be cumbersome, and the battery drain would make it impractical.

Maplin do a range of battery operated portable Freeview TVs with screen
sizes from 2 to 7 inches for around the same price as traditional analogue
pocket TVs.

I wonder also about the signal quality on a hand held at the moment. Its not
just a case of putting up with a bit of a grotty picture, its a case of now
you see it, now you dont.

They all stop working.

Nope.

No chance of an upgrade , but I'm sure it won't be long before someone makes
new digital portables

They become useless and will be thrown away.

I have one of these I bought for use as an extension viewfinder for a
digital camera because it has a video input on a mini jack socket, but
it hasn't been very good even for that. The display is fuzzy and dim
compared with any modern mobile phone, and has a useful viewing angle of
about 10 degrees. And it takes *three* AA cells. I'm not even sure if
it's worth the Ebay costs to see if anybody wants it, so it'll probably
go in the bin, like thousands of others.

Maplin etc have sold them for some time.

But aren't they likely to be DVB-H ie. Pay_through_the_nose_View?
A DVB-T pocket set with a built in aerial is perfectly possible now
but I suspect even Argos wint put up with 90% of them being returned.

That's easy. They just make them non-returnable, like Freeview boxes, MP3
players, digital cameras...
