BBC West from Mendip transmitter
I am trying to help a friend configure their digibox and DVD recorder
(with freeview) to pick up the Mendip transmitter and therefore BBC
ONE West They are based on the Bristol channel.
I have aligned their aerial as per the wolfsbane website, in order to
pick up bbc west from the Mendip transmitter. However, despite (I
believe) correct alignment, they are picking up the Wenvoe transmitter
from Wales, and therefore only receive BBc Wales. I believe this may
because of their proximity to Wales, despite being on the Bristol side
of the Channel.
To confuse matters further, they can receive a slightly distorted BBC
One West using the analog signal from their tv.
Please can anyone advise the best way to ensure they can get BBc one
West.

'Slightly distorted' doesn't bode well.

Does the box allow a manual tune? If so select the relevant c hannel and
scan it. Might end up with BBC West on 701 or somewhere daft though.

An excellent choice.

Whereabouts? Lots of places struggle with Mendip along the coast.

Yes, I get a stronger Wenvoe signal off the side of mine than than the
main from Mendip. It's a pain.

Move.
You could always try doing a scan with the aerial unplugged until about
2/3 done, then plug it back in. If you get it right, it will miss the
Wenvoe channels and only pick up the Mendip ones.
Or do as Bill suggested and add them manually.

Indeed. The Transmitter for West TV would probably reach more people if
it were co-sited with Wenvoe. Back in the days of VHF TV, it was.
At present, both sites strugle to get any kind of signal into the
largest area of population in Bristol, so that only leaves the rest of
the area and most of it is along the Bristol Channel coast or otherwise
in line of sight for Wenvoe.

IIRC the West of England transmitter location was originally planned for the
top of Dundry hill, but had to be re-sited because of objections from
Bristol airport.

A main mast on Dundry would certainly pose problems for Lulsgate, but
I hadn't heard that story. Though a mast on Dundry would have problems
getting over Mendip to the south.
Isn't it the case that the preferred site on Mendip was above East
Harptree but it was moved because of objections on visual grounds?
