Be glad you don't live in London. There's virtually no local news there.

Even better, assuming that you mean that your local news is
really national news with a local 'Happening here (in Westminster
etc.)' type spin to it?!

More that London has a population greater than Scotland but only one local
news service. Can't remember the last time I saw news on there which was
truly local to me.

That would be a waste of time - it's half term here.

Does Scotland have more than one "local" news service?

They really ought to rebrand these services regional not local.

Bill, firstly, DON'T say stuff like that - you have no idea of the
mental states of anyone who might be reading and what you could
inspire.

Secondly, is there any chance that you could take your arguments with
other posters somewhere else, instead of constantly derailing what are
otherwise quite interesting and relevant discussions?

No-one contributing to any mass or semi-mass medium has any idea of the
mental states of anyone who might be receiving their message, and there are
obvious dangers. But what are we to do? In this case, we would have to ban
all news reports that mentioned Dunblaine-type incidents; not have
documentaries about that sort of thing; not have films or dramas about
sieges; and so on. It just isn't feasible. Really, if someone is so mentally
disturbed that they might commit a massacre, and if they have a weapon, they
are inevitably going to be triggered at some point.

>Secondly, is there any chance that you could take your arguments with

No, I like things as they are.The word 'derail' is invidious and
inaccurate. What you are objecting to is an inevitable and valuable part of
Usenet: people will join an interesting discussion and broaden the terms of
reference, and thus make the discussion more interesting.

People often go on about the pro-London bias from everywhere from Thurso
to the Gower but it has to be said that London should have local news
just the same as anywhere else. And local radio stations as well.
Capital used to be such, but not really any more. Virgin (now Absolute)
never really was. LBC is OK if you want talk...

Probably not. If you speak Gallic then you can have somewhat local
radion from Inverness, but otherwise its all Central Belt stuff.

True if you live in the Central Belt, bit different if you live a bit
further North than that. I'm reminded that Raigmore Hospital in
Inverness has a catchment area of 250,000 people. So would a really
local news service. There is always MFR.

Inverness does their own local news several times a day and it is heard
in the Highlands, Western Isles and Islay. Orkney and Shetland also do
their own local programmes each day. Also available online of course.

I live in the borough of Wandsworth in London - population about a million.
No local news service here. Using your definition there should be four.

I thought it already had. They just call it national news.

According to the BBC website, Britain was supposed to brace itself for
terrible storms with heavy rain yesterday, and we should move all our
valuables upstairs in case of floods and not go out on the roads unless we
absolutely had to, etc, etc.

It turned out that what they meant was *the south of England* would have
terrible storms etc etc. All we got up here in Liverpool was a rather
unremarkable dull damp day.

Yep, pretty much anywhere "north of watford" just has a slightly
windy & wet Friday night/Saturday morning. Looking at the medias
interpretation of the forecasts and warnings one would have expected
the whole country to have been affected but "Britain braces..." is
"better" headline than SW England braces..."

Lovely day here, after all the dramatic warnings. I went out picking
strawberries (seriously!)

I've been working in Wells today. It was truly *glorious*, especially
at about 8.30am with golden sunshine.

Nice view of the Mendip Forest mast on the way in, too (first way of
getting back on topic).

After tour was interviews for local radio (second way of getting back on
topic). Not heard of BCFM before but one of their staff "doorstepped" me
and my group at the end of a walking tour (in a very pleasant way, I
might add.)
