RF Amp Advice
We're in a valley, so reception here is pants. So I need an amp for
domestic TV reception. It doesn't have to be mast top - I have power
in the loft, just below the aerial, not to mention at the end of the
down cable.

Who makes good ones, and where can I buy one?

Thx
Andy

Whatever you use, make sure it has F connectors. Belling-Lee ones are crap
at UHF at the best of times.

If you really are struggling as close to the aerial as possible is the
ideal - ie a masthead type. Unless things have changed.

I don't think a yard or two of extra feeder is going to make that much
difference and the ease of maintenance inside the roof space over getting
up to chimney height has a lot going for it. Keeps the weather out of the
electronics and cable connections as well. Still might be simpler to get a
"masthead" amplifier, just because it's called masthead doesn't mean it
won't work inside. B-)

Might be worth thinking about the future a bit. Will there be a
requirement to add FM or DAB, or moving to DSAT rather than terrestial TV
(analogue or digital). Will DTTV be useable in your location after DSO?

No FM or DAB requirement (they have their own private dipoles in the
loft) and DSO here isn't until 2012.

- but no-one has suggested a brand or supplier!

Freesat? Well we have 3 sets and a VCR scattered about. 4 freesat units?

Yes, I know I should go digital - but not yet. SWMBO hates technology,
I want to talk her into a 2-channel-tuner PVR at some point, but there
are more urgent things.

I've just bought one of these
http://www.screwfix.com/prods/73739/Electrical/TV-Range/Amplifiers-Distribution/Labgear-Variable-Gain-Masthead-Amp-Kit-1-Way
to test, but I've not had a chance to try it yet. It's fully screened, has F
connectors and has variable gain up to 26db - at £14 (plus postage if you
don't buy £50 worth of stuff, or can't collect from a branch) it may be
worth a punt.

I'll have a fiddle with it as soon as time allows.
