Anglia East ( West version)
For some reason we are getting a cut down size picture on both the BBC East
( west) version on both sky and Freeview, however the analogue signal
remains its usual 14X9
this is only happening when National BBC programmes are shown, not when the
regional news is on, I have tried the other BBC channels including the East
version of BBC East and its all ok.
Anyone answers anyone?

It's an intriguing one - Cambridge appear to opt out of a dirty feed
from Norwich, as evidenced by a few 14:9 frames at the sub-opt point.
The BBC East (East) feed isn't showing network material cropped. So
why then is regional material originating in Norwich (which is
presumably treated as if it were network in Cambridge) not getting
cropped to 14:9?

Anglia East West, isn't that an oxymoron..? ;-)

No need to be rude, he was only asking :¬D
I'm not a tecnical type, can someone explain what a dirty feed is and why
it comes from Norwich?

Most regions take a feed of network into their studio mixers, then
switch the studio into circuit and then cut to a local source when the
opt is cued.
The Cambridge studio doesn't provide a full programme, during Look
East from Norwich, they opt out for 10 minutes or so and do the news
for their part of the patch. It looks like the feed of network on the
Cambridge desk isn't the "clean" sustaining feed from London but a
"dirty" feed from Norwich.

At a guess:
- the local news studio is not yet widescreen-equipped
- for this reason they have to feed the "analogue" network to digital
while the local news opt-out is on-air and ARC it to 14:9
- the opt-out has "stuck" in some way, or been accidentally left on,
so the "analogue" network is feeding the digital playout all the time.

They switched between 5 and 10 minutes before the end of The Apprentice
last night. The picture jumped briefly, and then looked much softer and
was pillarboxed on our 16:9 display right to the end of the programme.
We didn't keep watching after the programme finished.
We were watching BBC1 East (W) on DSAT via sky+.

The Cambridge _local_ news is full 16x9 widescreen now (though it
looks upconverted and soft), but it seems the _network_ feed to them
is still 14x9. They might be doing a little zooming/cropping of that
at opts too, because you see the picture zoom in slightly.
However, they're usually _really_ good - they switch only when they
have to, and often at a cut in the source to hide it. I haven't seen
any unexplained 14x9 network before - but these last few days they've
had it several times when I've switched on - e.g. before and during
Eastenders last night, during Breakfast this morning.
Flick the switch someone please!
Cheers,
David.

One which has come via Norwich then?
I've never seen Anglia West, do they do the same sort of thing, an opt out,
or is their version a complete programme in it's own right just with West
presenters featuring news from the west of the region?

Anglia has its own seperate programme for the West of the Anglia region,
broadcast form Bedford,
BBC look east in the west of the region is broadcast from Norwich with a 5
minute opt in from the news studio in Cambridge
Tonight, some programmes on freeview still in this weird format with black
bars down the sides, some prgrammes on sky still the same, but others such
as the news and the local news and the football were in 16X9 then the 10
o'clock news is on, both again with bars down the sides, Sky picture looks
grainy, like its broadcasting a " dirty " signal ( as they say in the
industry)
Anyone any more ideas whats going on? looks to me like the freeview signal
and the uplink for BBC East ( W) is not being recieved properly, perhaps at
Sandy heath, ( my bedroom overlooks the mast!)

It was still wrong during Breakfast this morning.
Is there a phone number I can call to report this? Preferably one
which would get me through to someone who understood what I was
talking about, rather than someone who suggested I change the settings
on my STB!
Cheers,
David.
