And so it begins...
More 4, E4 and their +1 equivalents went FTA some time around 10.30am.

There's a FTA version of Channel 4 (London) on SID "8350", too, but
that's been around for about two weeks.

Yes just tied my Sky box with no card and get those.
Can't get 104, Ch 4, it says not available.

Mine asks for a viewing card rather than the red "Not Available" but then
I have a Freesat from Sky card that normally lives in the Sky box.

Is Channel 4 (104 on Sky) going to become FTA or remain FTV? PITA if it
stays FTV. B-(

It has a FTA stream, but that doesn't have a Sky EPG entry. See my
previous message for the parameters to put into the "Add Channels" box.

Aye saw that and yes that stream is FTA but doesn't really help as my HD
recorder (making up a poor mans Sky+) can only change channels of a skybox
within the EPG. B-(

I wonder if that stream will ever become the 104 stream? I'm assuming that
real Freesat boxen (if you can get one!) use that stream.

And so what's this rumour about the new ITV HD channels that are supposedly
"exclusive" on Freesat, in the same way that Channel 4 HD is exclusive on Sky.
The only way I can think that they can stop sky viewers tuning in to ITV HD is
to use another encryption technology that doesn't need a card, Sky receivers
won't have the necessary CAM to decode it...

I think the present situation is a temporary one. The "8350" stream
doesn't have a narrative soundtrack or Now&Next information. I fully
expect channels to play a game of musical chairs for a bit.

Channel 4 has to find another Astra 2D transponder to put all its
LEMNOS advertising regions on (with or without +1 variants). Similarly,
Five has to find some space on 2D. Unfortunately, Sky seem to have
taken up all the spare transponders on 2D.

Astra 2C has only one user at the moment, and that's Five. There are
currently 15 spare transponder frequencies on 2C.

I think that ITV HD is going to be using a video compression algorithm
that's not available in the Sky HD box.

ISTR they did this trick before with a spare ITV 2 stream, by flagging the
stream with an encryption flag that causes a Sky box to blank it, but is
ignored by any other receiver ?

Apparently they're transmitting it as a data carrier, so DVB-compliant
boxes will ignore it. It's thought that ITV will use some red button
trickery to make the video stream available (only on a Freesat box)
when an HD programme is on. Which will not be for at least a couple of
weeks. Apparently.

ITV up to their old tricks, as per...

So plenty of space for all of 4 to hop over to then assuming 2C is more or
less in the same place on the ecliptic as 2D... (says him avoiding the S
word).

Guess I'll just have to keep tuning to 104 and pulling the card out to see
when it starts to work, same for five. I must say I'm very happy that the
last FTV channels that occasionally have decent programming on are moving
FTA.

Except 2C's footprint is too large for UK FTA, they've got to use 2D, or be
encrypted. What Paul was alluding to, is that perhaps a swap could be made
with some of the existing encrypted (and staying encrypted) channels on 2D ?

Ah right. No doubt all these other encrypted channels on 2D are "sky"
ones. I bet they'll drag their heels over moving if they have any say in
the matter. Now as Sky don't own the transponders surely it is up to the
owner to say who uses which transponders if they can sell the space on 2C
*and* the space on 2D then that makes economic sense to them and they
simply(ha!) just make the changes. Of course the larger footprint means a
larger target audience thus the possibilty of larger fees but I shouldn't
think there is much demand for pan-eurpean TV due to the language problems
and currently empty 2C...
