The SD pictures looked very soft and lifeless, in comparison with
similar live down-conversions such as the Proms. I found the 14L12
France 2 pictures on 5W looked much cleaner (but they didn't have that
overtweaked look that the French have a penchant for). I presume they
were downconverting separately from an HD source. No one distributes
sport pics in 14L12 internationally do they?

From the signal strength plots, you should be able to get that with a
40cm dish and an FTA box anywhere south of Carlisle. (11.591GHz V
20.0Mbaud FEC2/3)

The French station? A Topfield TF5000PVR. The BBC pics were also
received on the Topfield and a Digihome DTT PVR for comparison. Looking
again this week, I had the impression that the London BBC1 pics on DSAT
looked slightly softer than other regions. Certainly that's the case for
ITV1 and some of its regions.
For some of the World Cup last year I watched on TF1 analogue via a
SECAM to PAL transcoder. The pictures were not sharper than ITV's, but
the commentators certainly were. Actually the pics *were* better than on
IYV4 with its reduced resolution and bit rate.
