Post-nuclear broadcasting
I don't think anyone has mentioned this here.
On Monday 28th January Radio 4 Document series has this programme at 20:00h

Post-nuclear broadcasting
For much of the last half of the twentieth century the BBC was preparing
for post-Armageddon. Mike Thomson goes in search of the hidden bunkers,
and the people told to staff them.
For much of the last half of the twentieth century Britain, along with
many parts of the world, faced possible annihilation by nuclear weapons.
While the population at large were being advised to hide under the
tables and cover their windows with sheets, the BBC was preparing for
post-Armageddon.
A string of secret bunkers across the country, many of them used during
war time days, were converted into subterranean studios.
Play lists were drawn up, presenters given scripted announcements and
producers issued with sets of keys.
If anyone was still alive to listen Auntie would be there to entertain
and inform them.
Mike Thomson goes in search of the hidden bunkers, the people told to
staff them and a secret safe said to contain the unreleased running
orders for what was to be called Radio 10.

I'll be interested to hear if they mention anything about actually getting
the RF on the air. Studio's is a luxury compared to the practical nuts and
bolts of actually getting an aerial up and some power to run the
transmitter.

Won't listen again only work *after* the program has aired?

The main advantage of a Haynes manual is that it costs 15 quid, where the
factory manuals cost 100 quid and up, and that they will tell you how to use
two hammers, a block of wood, and a meerkat to replace "special tool no.
2-112-A" -- after Matt Roberds in asr.

Which begs the question, why is the "listen to this programme in full
button" sitting there 3 days before its due to air. It took me ten minutes
of screwing around to get it to stream, only to get the haughty BBC female
voice tell me "Sorry, but we can't play you the programme you requested" in
a condescending style only the BBC ruling classes can muster.

I suppose it WOULD make a change if they used a the voice of some peasant
from darkest Yorkshire. The lady in our local library for instance.
"Sorry luv! We ant got that prog for some reason. Dunno why.Gaffer's
probably tekken it 'om. 'E's allus doin' that, the little twat. D'yer fancy
owt else . . . apart from the obvious, tee hee! (flutters false eyelashes)"
Or I suppose they could use a voice from a London housing estate. "Nah we
ain't gottit, so fak aff ya cant!"

All of the above are just as objectionable as the haughty bitch. How about
neutral without such a strong accent either way.

That was what I thought, so Bill probably speaks in a neutral accent as
far as anyone else in that part of Yorkshire is concerned.

No, I get the piss taken because I sound posh. It isn't my accent so much as
the fact that I use more than 250 different words.

And possibly even that seems a week earlier than they were planning, given the
above URL.
