bbc 4 aspect ratio screw up
watching the 1982 top of the pops xmas special on bbc 4 tonight (!) i saw
the following....
obviously a show of such vintage was 4:3, and they were broadcasting it 4:3

except.....

what appears to have happened is the 4:3 image had been stretched to 16:9
and then cropped to 4:3 - resulting in image loss and everyone looking fat -
just like when you watch tv with people who insist on their tv shows filling
the screen regardless of original aspect ratio.

i actually encountered this a couple of years back during an airing of the
rock and roll years - it was really obvious then as the onscreen captions
were cut off at the edges. that time i called the duty office and after a
while it was fixed.

it does make you wonder if anyone at the bbc was actually watching their
output.

it finally fixed itself at the 12 minute mark.

Coincidentally, at the time it 'fixed itself', I was chatting to the duty
manager at the Media Centre, suggesting that he take a look at BBC4.
