It had been well over 700 days, 9 short of 2 years to be exact, since
the Guildford Flames Ice Hockey Club last recorded a League win at the
Hangar in Slough. For 2 and ¾ periods on top of that long stretch it
looked like the streak would continue, but a shorthanded Jozef Kohut
goal 57 seconds from time capped a 91 second span in which the Flames
erased a 3 goal deficit, forcing overtime, and eventually penalties,
to steal an 8-7 win. The Jets got off to a good start with strikes by
Blaz Emersic and Michael Bowman respectively before Milos Melicherik
replied for the Flames at 13:35 to cut the lead in half. Jan Krajicek
restored the 2 goal cushion for the home side on the powerplay at
16:09, but David Savage pulled the score back to 3-2 with a 5 on 3
powerplay goal just over a minute later. In the middle stanza Vaclav
Zavoral found the net in the 22nd minute to tie the score at 3 each,
but the Jets replied with Joe Ciccarello, Kevin Phillips and Zoran
Kozic strikes to finish 40 minutes of play with a 6-3 lead.
Melicherik netted his second at 49:08 on the powerplay, but Slough
answered through Kozic at 52:35 to regain the 3 goal advantage. With
time winding down, Lukas Smital started the comeback at 57:32 to make
it 7-5 and Kohut pulled the Flames to within one 30 seconds later
before his mark at 59:03 to knot the score at 7 each. The clubs
played 5 minutes of scoreless overtime before the Flames outscored the
Jets 2-1 in penalties thanks to Stuart Potts and Zavoral strikes
answered only by Ciccarello, giving the Flames the win and the league
points.
