In a weekend that  was billed as a battle for first place, the Flames
travelled to Sheffield to take on the Steelers who were holding shared
top spot in the EPL table along with the Bracknell Bees who were
scheduled to visit Spectrum just 24 hours later.  The Flames hopes of
pulling even with the Scimitars were dashed when the Yorkshire side
found a pair of 3rd period strikes to overcome a 1 goal deficit,
handing the Flames a 3-2 defeat, sending them 4 points adrift of the
league lead ahead of the local derby clash against the Bees.  The
clubs played a scoreless first 20 minutes before the Flames finally
opened the scoring just under 2 minutes into the middle frame when
Ollie Bronnimann gave the Spectrum outfit the lead.  Less than 3
minutes later, the Scimitars tied the score on a Mark Stewart strike.
At 27:05 Rick Skene restored the Flames lead and the clubs skated to
the first break with the Surrey side holding a 1 goal edge.  At 48:28
Steve Roberts tied the score once again before the Scimitars took the
lead at 54:18 when Stewart netted for the second time on the night.
With just under 2 minutes to play, the Flames removed Joe Watkins from
their goal in favour of f an extra skater, but the tying goal would
not come, and the current league champions returned to Spectrum, 4
points off the league pace.
