BLAST FROM THE PAST: Slough Jets 4-5 Guildford Flames
Slough Jets 4-5 Guildford Flames (Flames lead 2 game aggregate semi
final 5-4)
Tuesday 23rd January 2007
English Premier Cup Semi Final First Leg
Slough Ice Arena, Montem Lane, Slough, Berkshire, SL1 2QG, England

The Flames marathon section of the fixtures list continued on Tuesday
evening as they travelled to Slough for the first leg of the aggregate
goal Premier Cup semi final against a Jets club that, to this point in
the season, the Flames had yet to beat in 3 previous league attempts.
With leg 2 on Spectrum ice just 24 hours later, the Surrey side
entered Tuesday hoping for a scoreline they could work with the
following evening, and that is exactly what they got with a 5-4 win
and a 1 goal lead with leg 2 still to play. The Flames opened a 2-0
lead with a pair of quick strikes by Vaclav Zavoral in the 13th and
15th minutes. As time ticked down on the opening frame Stuart Potts
added another to create a 3 goal cushion as the clubs went to the
first break. Things took a turn for the better for the Jets as Gary
Wishart pulled the score back to 3-1 less than a minute into the
second. Just past the midway point of the game, former Flame Tony
Redmond brought the Jets to within a goal when he beat Joe Watkins in
the Flames net, but that was all the scoring in the session and the
Flames carried the slimmest of leads into the final 20 minutes of
play. The Jets started the 3rd the way they started the 2nd, and a
shorthanded Steve Moria goal at 40:34 knotted the score at 3 each. At
49:21 Nicky Chinn gave Slough their first lead of the night making it
4-3, but Robert Sobala replied for the Flames just over 30 seconds
later and the score was tied once again. The Flames were the
beneficiaries of a powerplay opportunity late in the game, and Rick
Plant made it count with a goal at 57:04, to give the Flames the win
on the night, and a 5-4 lead in the aggregate series ahead of leg 2 at
Spectrum.
