You missed a really good card at Brighton on Wednesday. It opened with a
Claimer and descended to a Seller and an Apprentice race. They just did not
have the time to fit in a Ladies Amateur race. The 'Big Race' a Grade 5 was
a disgrace to the memory of Operatic Society who it commemorated.

I was amazed at how long ago it all was. Younger readers will say Lewes???
http://www.sportingchronicle.com/2008/02/lewes-racecourse.html
A Lewes memory from the 50's. I went to Windsor one Saturday prior to going
on holiday and blew a dreadful hole in my holiday money. Was no longer sure
about going away until looking at the Lewes runners for the Monday where one
C. Smirke had but one ride in the Seller. Result 100/8 and a happy holiday.

breasley coming over and giving us some great times with their battles up
the hill with the likes of Doug Smith. It was a while ago Derek a mere 40 -50
years.I cannot remember which came first ? my first race meet (Epsom)or
first trip to `ighbury.

I remember Scobie riding Brighton well. They used to say that he was so
close to the rail that his toe was over it and his boot covered with
whitewash after the race. I don't remember 'tactic's then of riders
switching over to what is now the Grandstand side.
Derek.
PS My first visit to Epsom eventually became my first post to this NG in
1998.
On August bank holiday Monday 1953 or 1954 I was up on Epsom Downs well
before racing. An old guy in a shabby mac was removing the dolls from the
course. We asked him if he ever got any good tips working up there. He said
Ken Gethin had given him three tips that morning.
The horses were such no hopers that we laughed and only gave him 2/6 as a
tip and he cursed us. The first was King Johnny (Ken Gethin up) which won
the opener at 100/8. None of us backed it . We thought it was a flash in the
pan and of course did not back the next two which duly won at something like
100/6 and 10/1. By this time I was down on my luck but backed the fourth
and fifth winners to put me in front. I put all my money on my final
selection which did not run. When I went to get my money back the bookie
the well known Billy Hill (not William ) pointed to a sign on his stand
saying "All in run or not"
Can anyone remind me of the names and prices of the other winners at Epsom
that day?
df...@globalnet.co.uk

And it's reply:

Think the meeting you refer to was 2 Aug 1954:

King Johnny did win the 1st at 10/1 but was ridden by E Cracknell. Gethin
was 5th on Straight Fella.
Zucchi won the 2nd at 5/1 (Gethin)
Zabaglione won the 3rd at 5/1 for Frankie Durr.(Gethin 4th on Rennies)
Corporal won the 4th at 6/4f W Carr,(Gethin 4th on Parlour Games)
Sound Barrier won the 5th at 9/4 (T Gosling)
Gethin completed his double on My Lovely in the last at 7/2. Sorry don't
have the name of your non-runner,
Marc

Thank you for your research. I'll be able to tell this story accurately in
future. It must be true that memories fade as time goes by or one gets
older.
If anyone knows Gerry Harding in Southfields London SW18 remind him of that
day.
Regarding the non runner, what happened in those days of yore when
everything was against the punter (except no tax and 1/4 odds a place) at
Bank Holidays the runners in the papers were from the three? day
declarations and the trainer did not have to confirm them as runners until
the afternoon of the race. Up on the Downs we could not hear the
announcements so the bookies took advantage of us by pricing up the declared
runners. Billy Hill operated under a banner with WILLIAM HILL on it. Another
well known face up there at that time was Jack Spot and they were not people
to demand money from.
