One day you are looking for Group 1 Sprints for a horse next you are
looking for arguments with long standing members of the NG.

http://www.usenet.org.uk/uk.sport.horseracing.html

Also, maybe what lordpilrig referenced? :

1. HISTORY
The newsgroup was formed in 1995 to provide a permanent home for the
fantasy racing competition which a group of UK-based racing enthusiasts had
started on the alt.sport.horseracing newsgroup, and to provide a discussion
forum for all matters relating to horseracing in the UK.
2. CHARTER
The group is a forum for the discussion of any and all issues
relating to horseracing world-wide with a bias towards the UK. The scope of
the group will cover all aspects relating to horseracing such as betting and
betting systems, training and riding, analysis of form and breeding etc, and
should enable any horseracing enthusiast to compare experiences and share
information and predictions relating to the sport. The group will be for the
discussion of Flat and National Hunt racing and both on turf and artificial
surfaces. The group's language will be English. The group will not allow any
betting in any way or form to be conducted on the group itself.
The group will not be moderated.
The group will specifically ban advertisements of any kind, job
applications and CVs and binaries of any length.
3. ADVICE FOR NEW MEMBERS
Most usenet guides advise new members to have a good look at a
newsgroup before posting, and this is probably a sound idea as far as
uk.sport.horseracing is concerned. There are usually upwards of 50 posts
daily, so it should not be difficult to get a flavour of how the group
functions.
Historically, the type of post which has always been roundly
condemned by newsgroup members consists of anything which appears to be
promoting a commercial activity (e.g. tipping service). This type of post is
in direct breach of the charter and will probably result in members
complaining to the poster's ISP, and the account being terminated.
On many occasions tipping services have attempted to "reply" (in
glowing terms, of course) to their own posts using different identities. As
a result many newsgroup members are highly suspicious of any posts from
unfamiliar names purporting to praise a particular service. It is probably
better to refrain from trying to praise a tipping service unless the poster
can provide proof that he/she has no connection to that service.
Occasionally newcomers to the NG post messages querying the merits
of various tipping services they have heard about. Specifically, there have
been numerous queries on the NG about a tipster/system seller named Colin
Davey and a system known as Factor Four. Many longstanding members of the NG
have strongly advised against responding to his mailshots, suggesting that
subscribing to his services is unlikely to be profitable.
The other type of post which tends to irritate a large number of
newsgroup users is that which merely includes an unsubstantiated tip. There
are several reasons why this causes annoyance. Firstly, there are, at a
conservative estimate several hundred regular newsgroup readers (possibly
many more). If a significant proportion of them submitted posts which merely
included horses' names, the newsgroup would swiftly be swamped and prove a
rather pointless exercise as few people would be bothered to wade through
all the tips. Secondly, there is an excellent fantasy competition run on
behalf of newsgroup members (see section 4 below) which gives everyone an
equal opportunity to demonstrate their tipping prowess, and for others to
follow their selections if they so wish. Thirdly, it can appear a little
arrogant for people to suggest that others should back a horse, well, just
because they say so.
On the other hand, posts which provide reasoned analysis of why a
horse should run well/badly, or posts which preview an individual race on a
horse-by-horse basis, almost unfailingly draw a positive response from
newsgroup members, even if they disagree with the assessment. The discussion
of ideas and theories is generally considered to be one of the newsgroup's
strengths, and the old saw about teaching someone to fish being more
valuable than giving them a fish certainly seems to apply as far as most
regular posters to uk.sport.horseracing are concerned.
For those posters who have their own horseracing-related
websites - tipping or otherwise - it is a generally accepted usenet
convention that a link to that website at the end of an on-topic post is
perfectly acceptable.
Finally, it is worth remembering that some newsgroup members are
interested in horseracing as a sport, rather than as a vehicle for betting.
Although a brief glance at the newsgroup may suggest otherwise, many members
would agree that posts which relate to horseracing but have no betting
relevance should form a higher percentage of the overall posts than is
frequently the case.
4. FANTASY COMPETITION
The fantasy competition provides all newsgroup members with a forum
to showcase their selection skills and has been an established part of the
newsgroup since its inception. In April 2000, the competition moved to a
web-based format. Potential entrants should check out the rules at
http://www.fantasy-racing.co.uk
5. LINKS
Probably the best UK horseracing link site available is the Nashwan
British Racing Links site at http://www.race-horses.com/links/index.htm
And the answers to many common horseracing questions can be found
at http://www.darob.demon.co.uk/faq.htm
Anyone who has a horseracing-related query which can't be answered
via either of those two sites should feel free to ask away on the newsgroup.

The wanker who posted this did the same thing to many other newsgroups. He
posted through an anonymizer in Croatia. I don't know what he thought he
would achieve, but a load of Javascript in plain text messages (i.e. the
Usenet default) does nothing.

Yeah Llort because before you were such a wonderful, consistent poster
before who posted in-depth reviews...NOT. I really don't know why you
have such a chip on your shoulder but it is quite tiresome.

I remember the early days of this newsgroup when it was thriving,
Beastie, Will Cutler, Dom Bradshaw, Hugh Taylor, Martin Sage, Malcolm
Wright, Harry Demetriou etc etc - the fact is that this newsgroup
deteriorated partly by twats like RaceXpert (sic), spammers, the
fantasy contest moving, the rise of the Betfair forum and the simple
fact that the 'older', longer-standing posters just moved on as other
priorities took over in their lives. ie. kids, jobs etc.

I still think this ng has a lot of life left in it, but it's down to
everyone to contribute and not just lurk and for us all to put aside
petty bickering and start concentrating on new ideas, finding value
and offering up opinions and support to those who can still be arsed !

Well, the reason why I and others don't bother is because the clique
take anything that doesn't agree with their views so personally. Have a
look at Aid's response to to my suggestion that Natagora looks like a
non-stayer and you'd think I'd just taken his 16yo daughter's virginity.

Re: uk.sport.horseracing charter
I still have Rogers last E-Mail to me on file dated 26/10/2002, I didn't
like to delete it. Referring to the horse Invitation that his cousin had a
share in. It simply read:-
"right at the bottom of the handicap, with a 5lb claimer!"
The claimer was Ryan Moore but the horse did not win that day or ever again.
Derek.

Re: uk.sport.horseracing charter
It makes me smile thinking back to some of those times and Roger especially.
I remember exchanging e-mails with him when he wanted to set the
newsgroup up for an Aprils Fool joke, forget what exactly the joke was
like, but he was as keen as fook.
His sense of humour was as dry as buggery.

Loads of good memories on those archives and loads of names that make me
really nostalgic....other than those mentioned earlier by Dave...
Rob Bain, Peter Bell, John Savory, Brian Hogg, Dom, Mal, Vic, Paul
Aitman, Iceberg, Darren, Ren, Anne Ramkaran, Alex and all the others
from the various 10 to follow, 5 to follow competitions.

Nice to see some of you still posting as well...
