Visual Fox-Pro - not really OT
I was just using Raceform interactive and the RP site when everything
stopped , and a message appeared saying that VisualFoxPro couldn't open
because there wasn't enough memory (odd , since I'm using a new computer
with enough hard disc space to lose the Child Benefit office's database
without trace, and with 2 Gb of RAM) . I gather VPF is something to do with
databases. Does any of you know enough about these things to say what's
going on , and whether the problem is with Raceform or the RP site ?

Hey Mike
Try emailing RI support but my best guess would be that you need to
increase the size of your virtual memory settings ?
Click on START>CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM
then go to the ADVANCED TAB
Under PERFORMANCE click SETTINGS
click the ADVANCED TAB
then make sure you have "Adjust for best performance of Programs" set
for Processor and Memory.
Let me know what your virtual memory is set to
You may need to click on CHANGE and make sure it is set to SYSTEM
Managed Size

Visual FoxPro is a Microsoft database program,
part of Microsoft Visual Studio suite. I have it as
part of Visual Studio, along with the FoxPro
manuals. But cannot for the life of me see the
purpose of FoxPro when there is Excel, and if
needed Access.
I'm surprised that you have Visual FoxPro on
your system unless you bought software based
on it, which would raise copyright issues, since
FoxPro is a Microsoft product and presumably
can't be incorporated in another product without
a licence from Microsoft.
I'm interested in Raceform interactive, is this
a subscription product. I'd like to be able to
extract data with something like a Racing Post
site API (Application Programming Interface).

Thanks for the help . The virtual memory is currently set to 2346 MB - does
that need changing ?
Not so sure about e-mailing RI - in the first place , I can't be sure the
fault was down to their software ; and anyway I did e-mail them quite a
number of times a few years ago - they were always polite , but the problems
weren't resolved !

Well , I don't know the source of the VPF - I rather assumed it was
connected with Raceform Interactive ; I do also have the Microsoft Office
2007 Home/Student Edition (or something like that) which includes Excel ,
Word , One-note and Powerpoint . I think these are the only bits of software
I've added .
Raceform Interactive is a subscription product . Whether it would suit your
needs I'm not competent to say . I got my current copy a couple of months
ago on a special offer lasting until Christmas . I used to subscribe to its
predecessor (Computer Raceform) , but that had a lot of bugs which they
didn't seem able to fix , and I gave it up . When it was updated to Raceform
Interactive I had a look at the sample disc , but still found bugs in it .
However , having been given the impression that it had since sorted things
out , I thought I'd give it another try (and the trial disc has limited
features) . In fact , I haven't really got round to giving it much of a test
yet , though in my limited use of it I haven't so far come across any bugs .
However , it certainly has major weaknesses (for me) in terms of
functionality and ease of use .

That seems like plenty of virtual memory, so long as it states 'system
managed size' you should be ok there. Must admit I have never seen any
other errors related to VFP and I use RI pretty much all the time,
mainly for performing queries etc but also for overnight/future decs and
for my own ratings etc. I would still email them - they may be able to
tell you 'sorry we don't use vfp' or 'sorry we don't know what the hell
that means' ;-)

OK - I think I'll leave it this time , and e-mail them if it ever happens
again .

It has happened again , so I e-mailed RI , and they replied saying not sure
, increase the virtual memory , let them know if the problem recurs .
