Ball moved
Q. On a longish par 3 A is fortunate to land on the green nearish the pin. B
is, as usual, nowhere (OK that's me). C also surprises himself by hitting
the green, after which his ball probably (it's a long way away) hits A's
ball and, logically, moves it. Trouble is nobody has the faintest idea where
A's ball started or in which direction it was knocked. After a bit of head
scratching the ball was played as it lay.

Were we right?

No, A's ball has to be replaced (r. 18-5). As you can't be sure
exactly where the ball lay, just make your best estimate and place it
there (r. 20-3c)

It is always something of a lottery, when viewed from a distance,
where to replace a ball when it is moved. But as Johnty says it MUST
be replaced otherwise a penalty is incurred even though the
replacement is actually a guess!

This happened to me only yesterday in a KO but in my case my ball was
knocked into the hole. It would hardly be right for me to have holed
at my previous stroke when my ball was at rest, so all such balls must
be replaced. As it happened my opponent took my ball out of the hole
and replaced it and I had to consult with the little book to see
whether that was correct or not. As it happens it was but if I had let
it go and it not have been correct then any penalty would have been
MINE.

You must have played a match often enough when that was exactly the
case - replacing the displaced ball has only been required in 1984.

I'm not as old as you, Johnty. :-) :-)

Hehe. you must have had a very hard paper round.

Incidentally, that previous statement should read "*since* 1984", of
course.
