ball striking ball
To-day at a par 3 I played first and my ball ended up about 6 feet from the
flag. My opponent then played his shot from the tee and his ball struck
mine. My ball was pushed well past the hole while his stopped dead.
I said he was not subject to any penalty for striking my ball but thought
that my ball should have been replaced at the point where his ball struck
it. We did not agree so I played it from where it was now sitting, both got
a 3 so no harm done.
Who was right?

You were. You should have replaced your ball where it was and then
played from there. He gets to play his ball where it finished.
What if his ball had knocked yours into the water?

Re: ball striking ball
Thank you both; what you say is interesting as there are deep bunkers at the
back of the green and he could have knocked my ball into one of them, in our
case the water hazard is immediately in front of the green so unlikely to
end up there. At another of our short holes however there is an out of
bounds at the back and it makes sense that I could have retreived my ball
from there if the situation arose.

Stewart,
You would also have had to replace your ball, if it had finished up in the
hole!!
(Rule 18-5 applies to your ball; Rule 19-5a applies to your opponent's
ball.)
