Sorry guys, I've obviously missed something here (no Sky, Sentanta,
cable etc). Can you explain?

I always thought such mentality was a 'male' preserve but I definitely
heared a female voice shouting it out on day 2, or maybe it was one of
the guys who'd been severely Gotcha'd by a nearby irate spectator :-)

I'm sure you can work this one out for yourself, Dave, if you have ever
watched a golf tournament on TV which had Americans among the spectators.
Some have the habit of shouting out "In the hole", particularly on par 3
holes, immediately the player strikes his ball from the tee, regardless of
the quality of shot.
The US Open championship played over the past few days, ending with an
18-hole play-off on Monday was rife with such inane comments.
It seems to be an American thing, but the British morons are not slow to
catch onto new ways of advertising their stupidity, so it is creeping into
the Open Championship as well.
I would love it if every other spectator within earshot, turned, pointed and
shouted "moron!", but that may just have the reverse effect and encourage
them further.
John Turner has the answer.

Perhaps we should just declare open season on the morons and forget the need
for a license.

At one tournament earlier this year in the US (I don't remember which
-- it may have been Bay Hill) Vijay Singh had a shot to the 18th green
over water. As soon as he hit the ball some fool yelled, "Get in the
water!" Truly low class all the way.
I'm with you guys on the "Get in the hole" thing. I think it is
stupid, arrogant, and lacks etiquette and most unfortunately it gives
the appearance that all us Yanks are like those idiots. If I was
running a tournament I would immediately have security throw those
people out on the street.

I'm not sure that a licence is required. Most likely classified as
vermin, so just shoot till the gun barrels are hot.

Or the length of the hole.
I find it particularly annoying when these idiots shout this on par fives.
Must be a cultural thing.
UK idiots are keen not to be seen as such but clearly it's the opposite in
America. :-)

I'll go for one of those and sorry for highlighting the irony but the
preferred spelling is 'Licence' in the UK and 'License' in America. :-)
I still want one though. :-)

Oh I sure that there are plenty of idiots over here too, I've seen them
spectating at some of our Northern events, it's just the language is a
bit different:
"Tha's the Lad" instead of, "You da Man!"
and, "Get thee in t'oyle" instead of, "In da hole!"
