You will need to contact the Committee running the event as it all depends
upon what the Conditions of Competition say.
The Conditions may say that it is a condition of entry that a player has a
handicap of 16.4 or less at the time of entering in which case if it goes up
or down before the day, the entry is still valid, or
the Conditions may permit a player to enter with a higher handicap but be
limited to playing off 16, or
that a player's handicap on the day of a round or match of the tournament
must not be higher than 16.4 requiring your club to replace you with someone
else.
There are several other posibilities - only the organisers can tell you.
It sounds to me, without knowing anything about the Beverley Open, that you
will still be able to play but you will be competing in Div 3 and not Div 2.

"No its a div 2 open div 3 open is my own course?"
This sentence makes no sense, particularly ending as it does with a question
mark.
Without understanding the question, I cannot answer it.
Do you want to try again?

Malcolm,
Their Entry Form appears to be seriously devoid of 'Conditions....'!
(see http://tinyurl.com/4d37h4 )
One would have thought that having gone to the trouble of placing their
'Entry Forms' online then they should really have posted
'Conditions.....' at the same time. Very annoying for anyone concerned
with administering rules etc.
In these parts 'Entry Forms' and 'Conditions....' are part and parcel of
the same document.....is this not the case in the UK?
cheers

Thanks David, I went there first of all looking for information, but
Thomopac says he is playing this Saturday.
I have just phoned Beverley & East Riding GC Pro Shop, apparently the CoC
for this "Open" are as vague as the ones for their own club Opens which
should as you say, be on or attached to the Entry Forms.
It seems that there are a series of monthly Medal play competitions open to
members of golf clubs in the district of Hull and thereabouts which would
include Beverley. These "Opens" are divided into divisions with scratch and
handicap prizes. Each of the three divisions plays on different dates.
While the Pro Shop was very familiar with these competitions, they did not
know the CoC, or at least did not have them to hand.
Not knowing Thomopac's name, I could not find out which Division he was down
for but there was an entry for a player in Division 2 with an 18 handicap
which read "18(16)", suggesting that Thomopac could still play in Division 2
although his handicap has gone up to 17, but he would have to play of 16.
The Pro thought that had his handicap been 17 and he had been down to play
in Division 3, he would not have been able to play in that Division if his
handicap went the other way - down to 16, because of the scratch prizes.
Why those that run golf competitions think they can do so without setting
down the CoC, beats me. They are needed even for the most social of
competitions.
I know that all those taking part often know the basics, such as: only for
men with handicaps; singles stroke play; Stableford scoring; full handicap
allowance; highest points wins; ties decided on count back, etc but there
are other eventualities to cover such as Thomopac's dilemma, and it is so
much easier if they are thought out and written down beforehand.
Regards,
Malcolm

Re: local opens question
Thank you all for your help. My club is Ganstead Park this Saturday the
division three open is there and i can play in that. but i have been chosen
for the division two open at Beverley and as Malcolm has stated no one seems
to know CoC so i will cancel Beverley and play at Ganstead.

Glad you have been able to sort it out but it would be worth establishing
the Conditions of Competition so you know what to do when you are down to
play in Div 3 and your handicap goes down after entering.
Good luck in the competition.
