RR SoCal 2008 - Call for Golfers!
Thank you, thank you! You're far too kind.....
It's nearly here! The second annual RSG SoCal tournament! *ticker
tape ticker tape*
Reservations are set for 90 holes over three days: 36 Friday, 36
Saturday, and 18 Sunday followed by watching the Lions and Raiders
fail to appear in the Superbowl. (For the pedants with good
memories,
no, the Tigers aren't playing either.)
Friday (February 1) morning: Empire Lakes Golf Course in Rancho
Cucamonga, CA (home of the Nationwide Tour's SoCal swing and an
Arnold
Palmer-designed course). This is a very walkable course, though they
don't allow pull carts for reasons that totally escape me. I've
played this course a hundred times and it gives some fun
opportunities
to get greedy or play conservatively. The 18th hole here was just
rated by Southland Golf Magazine as one of the top par 5s in Southern
California. If you want an eagle, a good shot off the tee gives you
a
excellent chance to be on in two And of course Dug became Dead to
Pflum on the 14th hole here! :) www.empirelakes.com
Friday (February 1) afternoon: Oak Quarry in Riverside, CA. This
course is built on the site of an old rock quarry and has a lot of
exceptional and scenic holes as well as boasting the top-rated par 3
in Southern California. Don't miss the view of the 2nd hole's
fairway
from the championship tee. This is a Dr. Gil Morgan/Schmidt-Curley
Design course and probably my second favorite course in the Inland
Empire-and only second because it's a carts-only course. We'll be
back here on Sunday morning for the final tournament round. www.oakquarry.com
Saturday (February 2) morning and afternoon: Located in the mountains
between Rancho Cucamonga and Palm Springs, the Southern California
PGA
Courses are Schmidt-Curley designs, with some holes reminiscent of
Oak
Quarry-both Oak Quarry and the PGA courses opened in 2000. We will
play the Legends course in the morning and the Champions course in
the
afternoon. There are a lot of fun holes on both of these courses,
with some blind shots to keep you on your toes and some risk-reward
options on short par 4s and a split-fairway par 5. You can walk here
if you want and I'm going to try to get them to give us a couple kids
with carts to get us to and from the one par 3 that is a long, long
hike. I love these courses and played them constantly when I lived
in
Rancho Cucamonga. http://www.scpgagolf.com
Sunday (February 3) morning: Oak Quarry "Last Chance for Glory"
round. Bring your "A" game and rack up those Stableford points!
Sunday (February 3) afternoon: We'll congregate in a bar and watch
the
Superbowl. Prizes and bragging rights will be awarded during half-
time.
Like last year, scoring will be a Modified Stableford format so that
a
blow up hole isn't cause to surrender to ignominy. Depending on
interest we might have a skins game going as well (figure a $10 buy-
in) and rumors are suggesting Border Wars 2008 is potentially in the
offing if the Pesky Canadian contingent can join us.
Lodging will be the same as last year to keep everyone centrally
placed in Rancho Cucamonga with easy access to Empire Lakes and Oak
Quarry via surface streets as well as offering quick freeway access.
The most central hotels are concentrated to the north of Ontario
Mills
in the quadrant northwest of the intersection of Interstates 15 and
10. Any of these will put you within walking distance of the dining
options for Friday and Saturday night. There are other options in
the
area as well that are not easy walking distance. In no particular
order:
Towneplace Suites
9625 Milliken Ave, Rancho Cucamonga, CA
(909) 477-6945
Holiday Inn Express
9589 Milliken Ave, Rancho Cucamonga, CA
(909) 581-3846
Homewood Suites by Hilton Ontario-Rancho Cucamonga
11433 Mission Vista Drive, Rancho Cucamonga, CA
(909) 481-6480
Hilton Garden Inn Ontario/Rancho Cucamonga
11481 Mission Vista Drive, Rancho Cucamonga, CA
(909) 481-1800
Courtyard by Marriott
11525 Mission Vista Dr, Rancho Cucamonga, CA
(909) 481-6476
There are plenty of air travel options in the region. In terms of
proximity to the venues, Ontario International (ONT) is the ideal
solution. Alternatives include John Wayne/Santa Ana (SNA), Los
Angeles International (LAX), Burbank (BUR), and Long Beach (LGB).
Note that if you fly in late in the afternoon your preference should
be ONT. Driving eastbound on a weekday afternoon is very
challenging. Travel westbound is heavy on Sunday afternoon/evening
as
well. It can take over 2 hours to travel from LAX to Rancho
Cucamonga
at rush hour.
Costs, you ask? Pretty much the same as last year. $330 for all 5
rounds of golf plus a goodie bag and a contribution towards prizes/
trophies. Donations for the prize table are also graciously
requested.
As Mike Dalecki would say, y'all are welcome. Please feel free to
post questions here or shoot me an email at
rancho<nohormelproducts>bob@gmail.com (delete the obvious text). A
great time was had by all at last year's tournament and I'm sure the
same will happen in 2008!
