Golf Advice
I'm back to being a beginner! I used to play golf but stopped when I was 15
after playing since I was 10/11. I am now 27 and want to pick it all back
up.
I live in South Wales, UK and would be interested in practising until I am
good enough and then enter competitions.
I am looking for advice on a decent set of clubs to buy. I have a bag so it
doesn't bother me if it's a set without a bag. I'm ideally looking for good,
new (or used) and cheap golf clubs. Ideally i'd like woods, hybrids, irons,
wedges and a putter. I've seen the Dunlop 65i set and the Dunlop MAX set
being sol local to me for £100 - is that a good deal or are these poor clubs
for a beginner?
Any advice will be gratefully received!

I would suggest going to see your local pro or golf store and asking him. If
he's any kind of pro he will at least let you try some out in the nets at
his club. If he or they won't or can't do that, go somewhere else.
The advice given to me when I bought mine (and I still have them 16 years
later!) by the salesman at Nevada Bobs was:
1. Can you afford them? Tell the guy how much you are prepared to spend. He
should then show you a selection of those in your price range.
2. Do they fit? Have swing with them in the nets. Hopefully the place you go
to has some kind of machine that tells you whether the balance, lie, shaft
length etc fits you size and swing.
3. Do you like the look of the club? The place I went made me pick out 5
different 5 irons from the sets they had. The reasoning is that if you don't
like the look of the club, you won't play well with them, no matter how well
they fit you.
Good luck, and welcome back!

Hi
I have some Dunlop 65i irons and woods. I went for a set of lessons
and the club Pro reckoned that they were good enough for a first year
but after that I should look to replace them. I have also read reviews
of the 1 wood which stated it was ideal if you wanted to bash balls
down the range but not terribly good for the course. IME if I catch it
right it goes reasonably well but I tend to slice it badly. If you
fancy trying some then "Sports Soccer" are selling individual irons
for about £3.50 each and the woods for about £7:- Why not try a half
set ? If you are looking at the loose putters in the stores I should
warn you to check the faces VERY carefully :- I bought a putter with a
tiny dent on the front which I ended up binning and replacing with a
Carbite Blade from Direct Golf which only cost £10.
I only play occasionally as a social thing so I'm sure many others can
advise you better :-)

Don't worry, you could do that with a 300 quid driver...

Did you have a handicap at 15 years old ? If you were a decent player as
a lad you probably would do better to get a decent second hand set from
e-bay .
Something like Mizuno MX25 s irons would suit most players from 24 down
to the higher single figure handicap player. An oddyssey 2 ball putter
blade or mallet style and some cobra woods would likely see you sorted
for many a year to come .

Re: Golf Advice
Don't realy know what my handicap was to be honest. Probably around 20-25
from what i remember.
I've seen the set of Hippo OS4 Evolution which i was considering buying.
Anyone know much about these? They've only just been released to the market
this month i believe. My old clubs when i was younger was a mixture of Hippo
and Ping and i remember being quite fond of the Hippo clubs.....

The Dunlop clubs aren't that great but then again that's a very cheap price
for a full set.
In a recent round up of drivers done by Today's Golfer the Dunlop 65i was
the worst one on test by an enormous margin even though they only paid less
than a tenner for it so I wouldn't recommend them. Their conclusion was you
get what you pay for and this is too cheap to be any good.
Some of your local golf shops will have clearance offers coming in to the
new season and you should check these out.
Also have a look at clearance offers from the online stores as a lot of them
have last years clubs at bargain prices.
£100 is really too little to spend on brand new clubs though even for a
beginners set.
It's worth checking out your local pro too as he might be able to do a good
deal on second hand clubs.

Oops I forgot to include an example of the sorts of offers you should be
looking for.
http://www.onlinegolf.co.uk/golf-clubs/golf-package-sets/324scog/2110pog.asp
I'm not recommending these particular ones as such but this is a good
example of the sorts of deals you can get and something like this would be
infinitely better than the cheapo Dunlop set.
In short I'd recommend looking at buying better clubs cheaply as opposed to
buying inherently cheap clubs.
