Steve.
in the area i would recommend (sorry not played StAustell)
- Perranporth and Trevose - great genuine Links courses and Lanhydroc which
i played once a long time ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.
if you venture to North Devon then Royal North Devon is mine (i do the
website so contactable from there if you want half a green fee!) - always a
friendly welcome at the oldest Links course in England.
have fun!

I was a member of Lostiwthiel Golf Course for four years. It's a rather
tiring course. The 2nd and the 4 holes are very much uphill and do take
it out of you. The 7th is daunting with a "canyon" to the left and out
of bounds to the right. The 8th is a very short par 3, 100 yards, down
hill and serverely so at that. The back 9 are very scenic and run
alongside the River Fowey. A nice friendly club house with excellent
food.
If you are in St Austell you could also play the St Austell course which
is a member course, a bit tight but nice. Or Carlyon Bay which can be
a delightful course to play, subject to weather and wind. It runs along
the beach, a non links course, with beautiful views. It's owned by the
Hotel, and so priority is given to hotel guests when reserving tee
times.
Have a good stay in Cornwall.
