Hi one and all,
I have contacted Aldwickbury Park and they have agreed to allow the society
event to take place at Aldwickbury Park on Thursday 27th September at the
agreed price per person of £54 even though I currently do not have their
required minimum of 12 people.
So the event will be happening (but Aldwickbury Park reserve the right to
raise the price per person, if the numbers fall below the current level). At
the time of speaking to them there was 7 of us.
Confirmed players currently are now;-
Simon Ireland, Malcolm Wadsworth, John Laird, Chris Booth, Mark Myers,
Benway, Crispin Roche, Demetri Dourembeis and Peter Branch (non usg).
Hopefully Sam you will be able to join us as well, as I know you have
expressed an interest on the newsgroup in attending, and you can bring your
pot back that you donated and are the current holder.
To all you other golfers out there, there are places available up to a total
of 16, so if you wish to play, please e-mail me to confirm your interest.
I look forward to seeing all players at Aldwickbury.
I guarantee that everyone that comes will really enjoy the course, as thanks
to the work that the new owners have been doing, the whole course is in
superb condition and the greens are fast and the best I have ever known them
to be.

Weather doesn't look too bad though might be a bit chilly, hopefully dry
at least.
Great deal for £54 Simon, really looking forward to it.
Not wanting to be too competitive and all that in this world of
parachute games but it would be nice to get a Whippet winner in the
Softies' own back yard, though the prospects of that happening are
unlikely with the high profile Southern representatives and poor
form/out of practice/poor health in the Northern squad. Maybe Malcolm
will give us decent odds on the sweep ;-)

A bit of a chilly wind will have the softies scurrying inside to keep
warm, although I won't disagree with your estimation of the
preparedness of the whippets !

The Whippets are out-numbered about 3 - 1 (if you remember to bring Chris
with you), but then it is a Southern gathering.
The Whippets have won it before, John Laird, wearing the usg sombrero, in
its 2nd year in 2000 and John Hallas (getting his revenge over my win in
2003, when I putted it around the bank of the pond on the 18th to beat him
on countback) in 2004.
The man to beat is the current holder (and donator) and 3 times winner of
the trophy, Sam Smale who has won it in 1999, 2001 and 2005.
Not forgetting the other Southern winner in 2002, Crispin Roche with his (as
it was termed by Sam at the time) 'Outrageous' win with 47 points.
The course is in the best condition I have ever known it to be since 1995
when it opened.
I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow bright and early and Sam I hope
you make it in time for lunch.

Home safe, thanks to my chauffeur Mr Booth.
Great organisation from Simon and I agree that the ourse is in super
condition - it's a good job we went this week because they are starting
to hollow core the greens next week, so perfect timing.
Congratulations to Benway for his victory, though he's living in
Southampton he hails from Coventry which, on the Watford Gap principle,
is in the North so I reckon there is a partial moral Whippet victory,
again ;-)
Really enjoyed the break and meeting/playing with some of the more
regular posters and also a couple of local members Simon managed to
press gang.
Looking forward to another event or two next year.

Re: Southern Gathering 2007 at Aldwickbury Park GC Thursday 27th September
To everyone who attended .. a very good day out, once again.
Thanks to my team-mates from the morning session (Carl and Mark). Was a lot
of fun with quite a few laughs and comical moments and the icing on the cake
was winning the morning team event on countback!
Also to Sam and Peter for the afternoon round and particularly Sam's humour
and patience - not to mention the cricket lesson ;-) I'll work on that
cover-drive, Sam.
It was all a lot of fun. Just wish I could have continued my morning form
into the afternoon, though the morning score was certainly helped by TWO
chip-ins (one which deserved it, one which was a total fluke where a shot
from a bunker was going like an exocet until it hit the flagpole about 4
feet up and dropped straight in the hole!)
Thanks once again, Simon and congrats to Carl for his maiden USG victory!
