Recommendations For My First Set
Absolute beginner and I am looking to purchase my first set of clubs.
Looking in the usual golf shops plus places like Argos, etc, but can't seem
to settle on an ideal set for a beginner, with a lifespan that will allow
room for (I hope!) my improvement from novice.

Looking to spend no more than £250 on this first set, and I would be
grateful for any recommendations you might offer.

Thanks.

Re: Recommendations For My First Set
I bought a second hand set (complete with bag) for £150 to see if I
would like the game. After I found I was happy playing golf and knew
how to hit the ball I bought Calloways. I do not think it advisable
to buy an expensive set until you are comfortable playing golf.
Having said that there is definate advantage in having good quality
clubs.

Buy some decent quality second hand clubs rather than cheapo beginner
sets. Your local Bargain Pages should come up with something suitable .

A half set of irons is all you really need but they are hard to find
these days though they are hard to find - even so a decent set of irons
should be had for .
E-bay will get you the best bargains - especially if you avoid the very
top brands . Tell me something about your age , build and area you live
and I can give you more idea of what clubs to look for and where to look.

The Ram Concept V set in Argos is a good set for beginners and I'd highly
recommend them.

They're essentially a rip off of more expensive Callaway clubs and take
advantage of Callaways designs without having to pass on the research and
development costs.

The irons are high quality stainless steel wide soled cavity backs that are
very forgiving and give good distance.

Stainless steel clubs are better than the cheaper alloy clubs as they are
less prone to damage, can be reshafted if required and the lie of the clubs
can be easily adjusted.

It's a well balanced set which includes two rescue clubs, regular flex
graphite shafted 3 wood/driver (10.5 degree) with a good quality bag
included.

You'll struggle to get a better set for this amount of money and the whole
package is a great starter set especially now the price has been reduced.

They're superior to the Wilson set at Argos? Thanks for that, I'd kind
of dismissed that set.

Re: Recommendations For My First Set
If you're getting some instruction from your local pro, highly recomended to
stop developing bad habits ( bad habits are much easier to avoid with
tuition than to cure at a later date ), I'd recommend you have a word with
the pro.

- Certainly very good advice from Mike Short to look for a half set of
decent second hand clubs rather than a new set of cheapo clubs. Your pro may
even be able to source these for you.
- You don't mention your age or height but the pro can make recommendations
according to your physical attributes
- Cheap rip-off clubs may look like more expensive clubs but beware ....
they don't necessarily perform anything like them
- I'd recommend you forget buying a driver at first but concentrate on
accuracy rather than distance .... over 50% of your shots will be within 100
yds of the hole

Good luck and as you begin play more , enjoy it

Martin

This makes no sense to me Nigel - Lord only knows what an absolute
beginner would make of it.

I'd guess it's a pejorative crack about sunglasses and watches?

Sorry for the delay in responding. I've been away for a few days.

I haven't tried the Wilson set you refer to so I can't comment on those but
what I do know is that the Ram clubs are exceptional at that price range
and you won't regret buying them.
