Wearing Red on London's Courses - Why?
Hi there

I've recently learned that some golf clubs in London require that you
wear red clothes - see this link for an example.

http://www.teegenius.co.uk/CourseInfo.aspx?CourseID=cc0d1988-de23-438f-9e8b-7f9d8e6050ce

(near the bottom of the page)

Can someone explain the reason for this? I can't really find anything
relevant on the Corporation of London's website. Is it for safety, or
is there some more "historic" reason for it?

many thanks

Re: Wearing Red on London's Courses - Why?
It's for safety. Some of the courses are on land to which the public have
right of access. It's simply so the golfers can be seen by walkers etc.

And if that sounds like rubbish, the whole idea is rubbish. How does
making golfers wear red protect the public from being hit by the
golfers? Surely, it should be the other way round! You'll be telling
Scots wear tartan to protect Haggises next.

Welcome Carol,

At http://www.londongolf.info/courses/courseframe.htm?main=wimbledon_com
it says:
Wimbledon Common and London Scottish share the same course, they each start
from a different hole.
You are playing on a public common and other users have right of way, but
this a well established course and your play is seldom interupted. Also you
must wear a pillar box red upper garment.

See also
http://www.top100golfcourses.co.uk/htmlsite/productdetails.asp?id=217 for
some history.

In my opinion, since golf was played on Wimbledon Common as far back as the
early 19th century, either the red coats were a hangover from the army
connections or were for safety - to prevent golfers being shot at!!

The National Rifle Association had ranges on the Common before moving to
Bisley, and some of the holes take their names from that time (Running Deer
& Long Butt).

Chingford (home of Royal Epping Forest GC) and Wanstead GC also play
on common land and also require players to wear pillar box red out
garment(s). The bye-law requiring this was introduced in 1894 which
is a number of years after the formation of London Scottish GC and
Royal Epping Forest.

Sounds a bit dangerous to me, could they not be mistaken for landing lights?

And if that sounds like rubbish, the whole idea is rubbish. How does
making golfers wear red protect the public from being hit by the
golfers? Surely, it should be the other way round! You'll be telling
Scots wear tartan to protect Haggises next.

Welcome Carol,

It's for safety. Some of the courses are on land to which the public have
right of access. It's simply so the golfers can be seen by walkers etc.

Damn that should have been Woodford not Wanstead

Re: Wearing Red on London's Courses - Why?
It's for safety. Some of the courses are on land to which the public have
right of access. It's simply so the golfers can be seen by walkers etc.
