A penalty or not?
We all know that for it to be a goal the whole of the ball must cross the
line, the same for the ball to be out of play etc.
Does anyone know how it works for it to be hand ball in the penalty area? It
looked to me like not the whole of the ball was in the area, it was hand
ball, no disputing that but, was it a penalty?
If the ball was half way across the line and he touched the part that was on
the outside, how can it be a penalty??
Is this covered in the rule book???

Interested and confused of Ilford..!!

In football the line is counted as part of the area it encloses so if
it was on the line it would be a pen

No matter what the rights and wrongs are, a penalty is a penalty if given as
such by the ref. Hence it's a judgement call, and refs are only human and
can and do make mistakes. Having watched this on TV, I believe the ref's
decision was harsh in this instance, but no harm done, thanks to the
excellent Mr Green.

That'll be why it's called a training ground...

...as for the pen, I'd reluctantly have to say that I thought it was one -
I'd have certainly been yelling if it had been the other way round - but
what a save!

In line with what others seem to think, I was heartened by the performance
in a match that the form book said we should lose.

As for Bellamy - I know I complained bitterly when his name was first linked
with the club but I've had to admit that he's been one of our best players.
But Saturday just confirmed the worst aspects of his character - I can't
help feeling that, if he thinks that a bit of physical violence and shared
aggression bonds a team together, it's time someone gave him a real good
bonding.

Carlton Cole. for me, is the revelation of the season so far and I'm
impressed with his strength, commitment and agility.

And, please, I know Green's brilliant but could we keep him away from the
England team? We know all too well what happens to our players when they get
into the squad.

Please don't tempt fate. We can't afford any more injuries.

Too true. If you think about the people dispensed with from last season's
squad - Tevez, Mascherano, Benayoun, Reo-Coker, Sheringham, Konch, Marlon -
we need all the summer's replacements and last term's long term wounded back
fit and playing just to be standing still in terms of squad depth and
quality. None of them's 100% at the moment, so we certainly don't need any
more injury problems. The plus side is it gives players like Mullins and
Cole the opportunity to prove themselves, and full credit to those that have
done so.

A call up to the national squad ought to deal with that.

Could he be the next Emile Heskey, I wonder? I doubt there are many central
defenders who enjoy the physical challenge he offers. If he rediscovers his
confidence in front of goal, he may well get back in the running, but I
don't see that happening just yet. Curbishley had him on loan for a while at
Charlton, so maybe he can help him relaunch his career.

According to reports, he's still unavailable through injury, unfortunately,
as are Ashton and Bellamy. We certainly could have done with him for
tonight's game, what with Camara being cup-tied, so, unless Curbs calls on
someone from the reserves (thought- if you're never going to let them play
for the first team, what's the point of the reserves?), Carlton Cole will be
the only specialist striker available. I do not have a particularly good
feeling about this game, I hope I'm wrong about that and we stuff them, of
course :-)
