Thanks Rangers...
...for dragging Scottish football right through the mud, yet again !!

A disgrace on the field, and a disgrace off the field.

I am ashamed to be Scottish.

How exactly did Rangers drag scottish football through the mud - by
qualifying for the UEFA cup final and securing enough coefficient points to
practically guarantee CL football for the Scottish champions for a few years
to come?

Sounds to me like you are unable to differentiate between Rangers FC, the
199,000 decent fans and the couple of hundred thugs who disgraced their club
and country. Sounds to me like it's all just 'Rangers' to you - which is a
very childish way to look at things.

It was a lot more than a couple of hundred thugs mate. It was more like
between one and two thousand.

I don't think the actions of Rangers "fans" should be attributed to
Scotland. However, if you read the English newspaper reports, letters
columns and listen to the phone-ins on stations like 5live, it seems to me
that many English people *are* tarring all Scots with the same brush.

I don't think it is helpful either for Celtic fans to point score over what
happened or for Rangers supporters, management and media to brush this under
the carpet as nothing to do with Rangers. The line being spun constantly is
that these are not Rangers fans (even though there were many wearing Rangers
gear), they were not even Scottish (even though there are plenty of Scottish
accents present on the videos) and it was only 200 people (even though that
is not possible given the widespread damage that occured).

I would rather spend our energies working out what we can do to kick these
scumbags out of football for good.

In terms of the other issues. I think now there probably were some English
and Ulster ringers, as suggested in today's Sunday Herald. Also the drink
didn't help last Wednesday. Nor the result. Nor the screen. Nor the
organisation. However, this is not excuse thousands of Rangers fans caught
up in the violence, the silent majority or indeed Rangers FC.

Moreover, I'd be interested to know whether people think there is something
particular about Rangers FC which makes the events of Wednesday more likely.
As a Celtic fan I may not be perceived as a neutral observer, stating the
obvious I know, so I will try to summarise and distile what other people
have suggested could be a cause of Rangers' problems. Obviously Graham
Spiers had a right go and suggested that there was a social poison at the
heart of Rangers. One thing that the problem is definately not to do with is
because of Rangers protestant heritage. I would like to nail that one
straight away. Spiers has identified uncertainty amongst Rangers fans that
would declare that a heritage exists but whom are unable to define it. So
this issue is important I feel. Rangers heritage is not one of
protestantism. If people were looking for religion they could go to the
kirk. People were going to Rangers for something else. Stuart Cosgrove
mentioned on Radio Scotland today that it was all this colonialist stuff
that they should get rid of. Also it was good to see Gordon Waddell in the
Sunday Mail talk about "the famine is over, why don't you go home" as has
Darryl Broodfoot. Indeed I have also mentioned "Nakamura Eat My Dog." This
could easily be interpreted as an intolerance of immigrants. Repeatedly on
Wednesday before the violence even kicked off we saw displays of
sectarianism in Manchester. There certainly seems to be a superiority
complex somewhere there exemplified by the phrase "We Are The People". The
question is, is there a Supremicist attitude associated with Rangers which
Spiers, Cosgrove, Broadfoot and Waddell have all alluded to? Does this mean
they are ripe for the trouble last Wednesday?

Why isn't it 'helpful' for Celtic fans to point score? Can it do any damage
if Celtic fans point score? ( this is one of reasons I don't come here any
more, far too limp wristed, if you know what I mean ).

They have brought shame upon themselves and this country by their
neanderthal behaviour, yet again !! Rioting, looting, the images of that
poor policeman being surrounded by that hate filled mob will stay with me
forever, terrorising innocent woman and children, and don't forget the
elderly, oh no, nothing gets in the way of the 'peepul'.

I am sickened by what happened on Wednesday night. Celtic go to Seville and
take over 80,000, not one arrest, awards by FIFA and UEFA for our good
behaviour, perfect ambassadors for our country. Rangers go 3 hours down the
road and riot, leaving the smell of piss, vomit and stale beer.

Scotland's shame.

Nothing wrong with slagging off a few bears or a bit of trolling where this
violence is concerned, but it obviously doesn't help solve the problem. I
have no idea what you mean by limp-wristed, who cares what other people
post, why should it stop you posting how you feel?

What is more irritating is scumbags like Bill Leckie who, instead of just
criticising the Rangers "fans" behaviour, has to bring Celtic fans into it
somehow. He had the cheek to take a pop at Celtic fans in Seville, despite
the fact we won an award and our behaviour was in marked contrast to what
happened in Manchester.

Of course not, you tend to go into meltdown after you've had the pish ripped
out of you for a few days and disappear. You can dish it out, but you can't
take a slagging.

Better than racist bigot taunts from a racist bigot, eh Andy? What's your
new name going to be if Rangers lose the title? You'll need to find another
name to post under.

Aye, you keep telling us what a great life you have, grandpa. Whenever
someone feels the need to go on about this fantastic life they have or all
the money they have on usenet, I cant help thinking that the reality is the
complete opposite.

I wouldn't expect an auld cunt like you to appreciate technology. Can't say
I've ever played games on the PS3 - streaming videos and music as an
entertainment centre is probably way beyond you. You stick to your
turntable, your lathe and the "banter" with your made up pals...

Yeah, it was a Stoke fan who done all three.

You're not seriously trying to compare those incidents with a full
scale riot are you?

The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle and is not helped by claims
that the violence was happening 'all over the city' - it wasn't, it was in a
couple of localised hot spots.

There's a growing anti-Scottish sentiment in England tied in to the decline
in the fortunes of the Labour party and the shit spewed out by the
right-wing press about the supposed subsidising of Scotland by the English.
(FACT: Scotland with North Sea oil is the second biggest contributor to the
UK exchequer. Without NS oil, we're 4th. Source: Oxford University dept of
economics - but that's by the by). And the day we listen to the English
criticising us about football hooligans is the day I wear a green and white
scarf. They have killed, maimed and destroyed their way across Europe for
decades and they DARE to point fingers at us?

In any event, they have been waiting to launch into us for some time now and
Manchester gives them the perfect opportunity. They, like the majority of
celtic fans if this newsgroup and the phone ins are anything to go by, have
their own agendas and are more than happy to indulge in knicker-wetting
finger pointing and ignore the fact that of the 150-200,000 - the biggest
single movement of people for one event since World War II - there were a
few hundred drunken troublemakers, some of whom were travelling casuals from
elsewhere.

I'm not trying to say that the great majority of the troublemakers weren't
Rangers 'fans', - they were - but it would be naive to think that the
football casuals wouldn't turn up to an event like this. I suspect that the
'main events' of the evening were planned by the casuals from rangers and
elsewhere but that the great majority of the violence was executed by the
footsoldier neds in Rangers colours.

Although Rangers FC have been working very hard for some time to get rid of
this problem, progress has been slow and it's time now to get serious.

Rangers is identified as being part of this 'Blues Brothers' coalition of
unionist/loyalist right wingers and this is what RFC has to work to
eradicate. I would introduce the following 7 measures.

1. Stop all the Dambuster, Land of Hope and Glory shit blaring out of the
loudspeakers.
2. No flags of any kind (Israel, Ulster etc) other than the saltire & union
jack to be flown inside Ibrox and no articles of clothing with
political/sectarian slogans to be admitted into the stadium.
3. Any supporters bus which is identified as carrying these flags singing
prohibited songs on the way to, at or going home from the match to have
their tickets withdrawn. The entire bus.
4. Any fan found without a ticket at future European away games to have
their season ticket withdrawn and Rangers to publicly and unequivocably
demand that supporters without tickets do not travel.
5. Murray and the Rangers board should come out and clearly disassociate
themselves from the political mischief makers.
6. Publish the names and photographs of all those convicted of violence in
Manchester in the local and national press.

And here's number 7.

7. Bearing in mind how sickened we all are by the cunts in Manchester,
Murray should come out and apologise publicly on behalf of Rangers FC to the
city of Mnachester, UEFA and to the fans of Celtic, Aberdeen, Hearts and all
the other clubs in Scotland and to the Tartan Army for the behaviour of
rangers 'fans' in Manchester.

That scum shamed Scotland worldwide and it's time for some Mea Culpa from
Rangers - and never mind that RFC wasn't directly responsible. The result
will be humiliation on the part of the entire Rangers support and, properly
channelled, this humiliation can be turned against the bigots for being the
cause of it.

I think there is an opportunity now for a sea-change at Ibrox. The 99%
whould behaved themselves at Manchester are the same 99% who make up the
crowd at Ibrox and everybody I know is totally sickened by having the club
and themselves tarred with that brush - so christ knows what it's like for
the rest of you.

The simple fact of the matter is that Rangers is a magnet for that type of
sectarian, fascist scum.
The problem is that RFC has consistantly looked at the extent of the problem
and underestimated the depth of the problem.
The extent of the problem is very small in comparison to the size of the
rangers support, which is utterly massive.
However, the depth of the problem is very deep indeed, i.e these cunts are
here and here to stay because they have nowhere else to go - and they aren't
just going to give up and change their lifestyles because Murray introduces
family friendly policies and seating areas at Ibrox and prohibits the
singing of the Billy Boys.

Rangers made an estimated £20m from this European campaign. A £2m donation
to Manchester and the other £18m spend eradicating the scum would be money
well spent. Private prosecutions are the way to go if you ask me - a few
dozen is all it would take.

Isnt jim the one who says the celtic way is sweeping it under the carpet?
2000 rioters worse than three idiots (Dont condone the three and hope they
get life bans) . Mind you notice him and his knuckle dragging mates come
back at the same time to the NG,must have been in the same cell!

I think you have made a lot of great points and suggestions. There are a
large number of Rangers fans who really only care about football and couldnt
give a shit about the politics. However, I think there is still a hard core
of so-called respectable fans who strongly oppose any changes to the
traditions that you and I and many others believe should belong in the past.
They view any attempts by Murray and Bain to distance themselves as an
affront to these traditions. It's natural that people want to hold on to
things from the past, but to move on and make progress, you have to let them
go.

An excellent post and for me to add a few things would be churlish. Your
desire is clear and with that fine sentiment FishSupper, and the sentiment
of those fine Rangers fans that left scarfs etc in memory of Tommy Burns,
the future of your club will be secure.

Seconded. Zero tolreance is the way to treat these fuckers. If Rangers
decided to ban ALL fans from away European games for a period of time, I
wouldn't argue. Drastic measures, I know, and an affront to the 99.9% of us
that don't cause trouble, but we NEED to eradicate these cunts NOW.
