No big screens in Manchester next week
Cut and paste from http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/7405591.stm

Manchester City Council have already said the Champions League final would
not now be shown on big screens in Manchester. Ex-Manchester United player
Albert Scanlon, one of the famous "Busby Babes" team of the 1950s, said
thousands of United fans would be "gutted" and blamed the police and
council's "shambolic" organisation of the Rangers final. Mr Scanlon, who
will be going to the final, said: "All they're doing is punishing their own
people for their own mistakes. It wasn't the people of Manchester's fault
what happened on Wednesday. It was shambolic. "It is all down to their own
mistakes with Rangers which has condemned the United fans out of hand. "If
we win, the only place you will be able to see the cup is at Old Trafford,
but not everyone can be there."

Why do you think the council have decided not to show the Champions League
final on the big screens in the city centre ? Surely if ALL the blame lies
in the hands of Rangers fans then there should be no trouble next week with
the good natured and friendly english fans that would be watching.

It would appear that your inference is that GMP are partly to blame for the
events of Wednesday. Would be interesting to know if it's a common view
amongst Rangers fans. Can the violence against the police, and general
mayhem in Manchester city centre be explained/understood, in part, by a
broke big telly, the cops or no lavvies. Even Donald Findlay wouldn't use
that defence in court.

In terms of no screens for the Champions League final, it could also be the
case that GMP are just not going to risk it all happening again. Soccer
violence is not exclusive to Rangers fans. And the events of this week
unfortunately mean fans of MUFC will be denied their day in the sun, GMP
are not going to take any chances and are going to treat all football
supporters with cynicism.

Personally I'm kakin' maself I don't get my head kicked in at Old Trafford
next week by the Barmy Army. Once they hear my Glasgow accent I might be
starring in my own YouTube video. :)

I'm not blaming or excusing anyone, all parties are to blame from the police
to the council to the scum who rioted

I think so, if the big screen was working there would be no pissed off scum
bags trolling the streets looking for trouble

Although to read some of the posts recently you would think that it is

Especially when it comes to english ones

Real Radio tonight was abit like: "You know those hooligans were terrible
and you can't excuse it but....you know.... there were no buses, no
televisions, no toilets, the police were heavy handed, the TV screen broke,
the weather was hot, the pounds weak against the euro etcetera
etcetera.....but not that we are trying to detract from the hooligans."

The solictors will not stand up in court and say "Although my client was
jumping on the head of a police officer your honour, he was just desperate
for a pee. Can you let him off please?"

Well, on Real Radio tonight someone suggested that at one of the screens
that were working, people were still throwing bottles. Also someone else
suggested people were doing the bouncey bouncey ontop of vans before the
matched kicked off and they even knew the match wasn't going to be shown.
imho I think people are probably clutching at straws saying that the big
screen can explain the violence. Let's just be clear VOR, you aren't saying
that it's reasonable to trash a city centre if a big TV screen fails? I
don't think the screen failure can explain the orgy of violence that we saw.
There was a large number of hooligans present on Wednesday and they would
use any excuse for it all to kick off.

There was absolutely zero trouble in 1999 when the numbers on the streets of
Manchester dwarfed what was here the other night. There was even Manchester
City fans out getting a look at the team with our historic treble. All
passed off 100% peacefully. When will you just admit that your fans both
fucked up, and fucked it up for the people of Manchester?

I'm actually really pleased now that the Russians beat you and you went home
empty handed. In some tiny way, justice was done. But even that can never
make up for how I'll feel should United win the double and I can't celebrate
in my own city with my own fellow fans, just because of the actions of
people that have got fuck all to do with me and my fellow United fans.

Thanks, Rangers fans....thanks a fucking bunch.

Exactly, hooligans, not true Rangers football fans/supporters

Grow up, have you even listened to the report from the officer that was
attacked ? he quite plainly said it was his body that was injured, not his
head. Stop trying to sensationalise things

read Real ENGLISH Radio

Would that be the Juan Ghuy that hoopsbhoy keeps talking about

bottles.

Funny how the bbc, itv, cnn, sky etc never picked up on that one

Who was that, would that be the Juan Ghuy that hoopsbhoy keeps talking about
again ?

FFS, now the fans are psychic, couldnae make it up. Clutchin at straws ya
hector

Aye, YOU

Thats right

>I don't think the screen failure can explain the orgy of violence that we

I think it goes a long way to explaining why the violence started, but since
you werent there what gives you the right to judge the events ?

> There was a large number of hooligans present on Wednesday and they would

EXACTLY, hooligans are NOT football fans regardless of what team they sign
up to, be it celtic or Rangers. In other words it was the hooligan element
that caused the troubls, NOT the true Rangers supporters. Not that i would
expect you to understand that Liam* coz you are quite bitter and resentful

No you are right VOR. I don't understand you. And I don't understand the
thousands of Rangers hooligans that caused a large scale riot in Manchester
city centre either. 15 police officers were injured, 52 people were
assaulted. They were described as a
"pack of wild wolves" by a senior police woman. The Prime Minister came out
and described the violence as a "disgrace." This is a complete
embarrassment not only for Rangers FC and their fans, but for Glasgow and
Scotland. The whole of the world saw what kind of mindless thugs are
associated with Rangers. Sounds like you have some sympathy with the
hooligans. A night of shame for Rangers is perpetuated by all the weak
excuses that will come out for these animals. There is no no excuse for this
violence, none whatsoever.
