Colour question
I was wondering why teams called "Rangers" always have blue uniforms? Well,
maybe not always but the three I'm thinking of now, Rangers F.C., New York
Rangers hockey team and Texas Rangers baseball team, all have nearly the
same shade of blue.
Can't be a coincidence. Is there some connection between the colour and the
name?

I want to know if there's a connection between the name 'Rangers' and the
colour blue, bucketmouth.

I think certainly the US based 'Rangers' teams have something to do with the
US specialised unit of 'Rangers' which have been a part of their army since
the 17th century. The colour blue might have something to do with their own
set of drill instructions which was laid out in the 'blue book' - a drill
specific to the US Army Rangers.
Worth noting is also the fact that the 'billy boys' song borrows the tune
from the song "Marching Through Georgia" - a marching song written by Henry
Clay Work in 1865, referencing U.S. Maj. Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman's
March to the Sea during the previous year.
As for coincidence, why should it be anything less? Its the same blue used
in the Union flag, the stars and stripes and the texas lone star flag.

The Texas Rangers were a semi-military police force 'way back in the history
of the State. Most of the States have police called the Whatever State
Troopers but in Texas they're called the Rangers.
Your guess might be right about the hockey team in New York, though. I don't
know where their name came from. Their emblem is a shield with 'Rangers'
diagonal across.

Google those other teams. You'll be surprised how close the colours are to
the Glasgow football team. I'm tempted to say, given their relative ages,
that those other 'Rangers' took their colours from the Rangers FC except
I'll almost guarantee that whoever designed the baseball team's uniforms had
no knowledge whatever about a Scottish football team.
I heard a reference recently to a hockey player who "bled Ranger blue",
that's how I got on the subject. Maybe it is just a coincidence and doesn't
mean anything.
Any idea where the blue came from in Rangers FC?

I think its just the colour that they chose, nothing "in" it really, just a
colour *shrugs*.
You got a theory on it yourself?
from wiki:
"The four founders of Rangers - brothers Moses and Peter McNeil, Peter
Campbell and William McBeath - met in 1872 and named their team after an
English rugby club upon seeing the name in a book.[6] In May of that year
the first match was played, a 0-0 draw in a friendly against Callander F.C.
on the public pitches of Glasgow Green. The only other match played that
year was another friendly against a team called Clyde (not the present-day
Clyde F.C.) resulting in an 11-0 victory and featuring the debut of the
club's blue strip."

Well, I don't really. Just thought there might be something in it since
three pro teams named Rangers all use the same colour.
Probably nothing to it.

No, I'm guessing you're right, there's nothing in it. Just one of those
coincidences.
If I find a Chinese ping-pong team called 'Rangers' wearing blue, though,
I'll have to look closer at it.

Pedantic loyal here. The term Rangers was used for people who fought for
the colonists but there was no US Army until the late 18th century.

Of course Queens Park Rangers play in blue (hoops on a white background).
Stafford Rangers play in red and black though.
