OT:PS3
Got a PS3 recently. Anyone got any recommendations for good games or bluray
movies?
Another question, I believe that media centre on the xbox can be used to
stream DVDs at full 1080p. Can the PS3 be used as an entertainment centre as
well? I am assuming not, just curious.

Everybody's Golf, Call of Duty 4, Uncharted, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, GTA
IV, Resistance, FIFA 08.
All movies look superb on blu ray, especially if you have a 1080p TV with
HDMI 1.3 support

Yes, it will find media serves such as Windows Media Player, Nero Home, etc,
no bother and stream XVids, photos, music, etc.
The other good thing about the PS3 is you can easily fit any computer 2.5"
SATA hard drive without invalidating the warranty. You can get a 320GB one
for about £60

What exactly is HDMI 1.3? Is that just refering to a cable that supports
full 1080p?

Uncharted, Devil May Cry 4, Call of Duty 4, Ratchet and Clank TOD,
Oblivion Game of the Year Edition, GT Prologue, Warhawk, GTA 4 just to
name some. It makes a very fine media centre and will connect to and
streams from pretty much any media centre you may have. If you have a
PSP aswell you can watch the media on your PSP from anywhere you have a
wireless connection available.

Cheers. I'm just setting it up just now, updated to v2.3 o/s, set up the
video settings, downloaded a few demos from the PS store.
I tried the "find media centre" option, my home PC is connected and running
XP Media Centre, do I need to do something else for the PS3 to find it?

Ensure you have all the latest patches for your media centre and ensure
that your router is configured correctly. You should also have a look at
tversity which is a far better media centre application for windows and
unix pc's and absolutely free to boot.

No, the cable matters not a jot. What matters is the output soruce (PS3)
and input source (TV) support 1.3. It provides Deep Colour support, amongst
other things. Wikipedia it.
And DO NOT get fooled by Currys/Comet/etc into buying a dear HDMI cable.
ANY HDMI cable will do. A digital source is a digital source - it's either
there 100% quality or not at all. A £3.99 HDMi cable is as good as a £100
Monster branded one. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Look up AV
Forums if you don't believe me.
Disclaimer: all the above applies to short lengths only (say 1m to 5m).
Really long lengths may lose some signal on a poor quality cable

Give your PS3 a static IP in your router's settings, then stick that IP in
your routers DMZ zone (i.e. all ports will be open to the PS3 at all times)

By the way you want your PS3 to say "NAT Type 2". If you get type 3, you
may have problems connecting.
Type 1 is the best, but you can't get that with a router, you'd have to have
the internet connected directly to the PS3 (i.e. a modem connected to the
PS3, which I doubt anyone does, NAT Type 2 is fine)
Also if you want to stream album art to the PS3 from the PC, I believe only
Nero Home does it. WMP and TVersity don't.

I haven't got it setup all the time yet. I have a little lad who thinks that
TVs and monitors are for drawing on and that anything electrical that has a
slot in it should be filled with playdough, his socks, magnets, paper or
anythint the little bugger can lay his hands on. I am happy for him to screw
up the DVD player, but not the shiny new PS3! Once I can figure out how the
hell I am going to do that, I will be on more often.

I'm on media centre 2005 SP2, a lot of the online stuff refers to Vista
media centre and also media centre v11, no idea what that is. I'll try the
router config stuff and see if it works, but unsure if my older version of
MC is supported. Think I might just set up TVersity thingy you guys were
talking about.

My wee boy is 2 and I haven't figured out how to stop him shoving his
teletubbies music disc into the PS3 yet!

See the reply to ZB. Alternatively you can make them clothing from
velcro and attach them to the wall when you are not around to guard the PS3.

It's not Media Center that's streaming the stuff to the PS3. It's a
background process called Windows Media Network Sharing Service. It comes
with Windows Media Player 11. It used to be known as Windows Media Connect.
Media Center is simply a program, like any other program. Just download and
install Windows Media Player 11, then set up Sharing through it's Options
menu. If your PS3 is on and set to look for Media Servers, you're Windows
Media Player 11 will show that the PS3 is available to "serve" media to (it
may show as "Unrecognised Device", no matter)

Does it stream the art fairly quickly? Nero Home took an age to display the
picture, so i gave up on it and went back to WMP11

Pretty much instantly and it also has a portable media interface for the
PSP and Nokia N90 series.
It also does transcoding from pretty much anything you can get a codec
for, which is what led me to installing it originally as at the time the
PS3 and 360 had no built in DivX support.
It's an all round excellent piece of software and certainly as good as
TVersity but as I said it does cost around £20 to register it.

D'oh! Getting my s/w mixed up. Right I can see it now. Once the wean is
asleep, I'm going to unwrap my PS3 again and get this streaming working.

Nah, velcro is not strong enough for that wee critter. 100% ball of energy.
When I go away on a trip and come back, I'll find all kinds of shit jammed
in my multifunction printer. Not just the obvious places, you name it - the
paper tray, right inside where all of the ink cartridges are etc. He even
went in to my drawer, pulled out a set of headphones and cut off one of the
ear plugs using a pair of scissors. He is lucky it wasn't the bose noise
cancelling ones or the ER6s Marco recommended, he would have been in serious
shit. Actually scrub that, he is so cute, he can get away with almost
anything and I think he knows it.

Oh great, another kid that will complain when he doesn't get his own way in
the classroom. Just save up and give me and my ilk problems in a decades
time ZB. Teach him the meaning of, "don't do that as it is bad" now. ;)

He gets it alright, dont you worry about that. :-)
He probably gets away with a bit more than his elder siblings, but not much.

IGoing by what my PS3 owning mates say it can be used as a media
centre, well, with a Mac at least. The same people who made Connect360
have done a PS3 version.
