There's Ambition
BBC says that BSA describes Europe as a "distraction" that
NUFC doesn't have this year and he then states that the
best chance NUFC have of qualifying for Europe next year is
to win the Carling Cup :-) I guess taking your chances in
a knockout competition is easier than performing
consistently all season long.
Better start dusting out that cabinet.....

Maybe you are :-) As always, my point is to contrast the
performance of the team agains the expectations / wishful
thinking of the fans. We know we're going to struggle to
stay up next year, but I for one am confident that Keane
will pull it off. You folks believe you have a right to be
in the top four and be a top team in Europe and the current
saviour, BSA, pins his hopes on the Carling Cup. That's
sad.

it's not unrealistic for our fans to expect we'll be top4, after all
we were only 5 years ago, when we were withink a whisker of actually
winning the league (before it all went pear shaped)
i don't think it;s sad that allardyce is saying the easiest way to

Re: There's Ambition
I do not know where your ideas comes from, but as a lifelong NUFC fan, I must say that our new look
team will do better than the last one under Roeder. The year before NUFC finished 7th in the Prem -
and this was not too bad considering the crap players we had at the back. Sam has bought quality
defenders in Rozehnal and Geremi to bolster the team. If he lands Beye and a good left back (perhaps
someone of the calibre of Wayne Bridge), I am sure NUFC has less worry at the back and with the
midfield and the attack available, it is not unreasonable for any fan to expect a top 5 finish... in
fact I had a £20 bet going with a Spurs fan that 1) NUFC will finish 5th or better and 2) NUFC will
finish above Tottenham Hotspur in the coming season.
I might be wrong, but then I may be right! As for Spurs' spending, I see it as a case of "a fool and
his money are easily parted".

I was simply referring to a quote from Allardyce. He
didn't say he was aiming for a top five finish - he said
that the easiest way for NUFC to qualify for Europe next
year would be to win the Carling Cup.
As for his buys, he probably will strengthen NUFC in an
absolute way compared to what Roeder had available. The
question is whether NUFC is strengthened in a relative way,
i.e., whether his moves are better than those of the
managers of the teams that have been playing at the same
level as NUFC for the past few seasons. When it comes
right down to it, there's only one top five spot
realistically available (barring a catastrophe at Arsenal),
so a top five finish essentially means being the best of
the remaining 16 teams.
Allardyce realizes that, I'm sure, but he obviously isn't
ready to claim that spot for NUFC as he also realizes that
the competition will be intense next season.

I do agree with the fact that newcastle fans in general have a complex
about being a bigger club than we currently are....but talk of unrealistic
expectations makes me cringe....so when you say the fans think they have a
right to be in the top four well I can only say that compared to the other
teams in the top 4 we have spent the same if not more money in the
transfer market over the past 10 years, have bigger crowds than liverpool
and pay some of the highest wages in the premiership and so for that YES
we expect to be challenging the teams who we are competing financially
with, unfortunatley the money has been spent badly and far too often on
players to sell tickets and get puiblicity and not for the need of the

except we don't.
everyone else thinks thats what we expect, but a lot of us are quite
level headed.
it's not unrealistic for our fans to expect we'll be top4, after all
we were only 5 years ago, when we were withink a whisker of actually
winning the league (before it all went pear shaped)
i don't think it;s sad that allardyce is saying the easiest way to
europe next year is the carling cup, i think it's honest.

That's
sad.

except we don't.
everyone else thinks thats what we expect, but a lot of us are quite
level headed.
it's not unrealistic for our fans to expect we'll be top4, after all
we were only 5 years ago, when we were withink a whisker of actually
winning the league (before it all went pear shaped)
i don't think it;s sad that allardyce is saying the easiest way to
europe next year is the carling cup, i think it's honest.

Amzing how you know just what we think from right the way over in moose
fucker land there. You know better than me, and I'm in Newcastle itself
(sunny morning by the way, bit chilly for July. Postman's not been yet, but
the paperboy has. But then you already know that).
It would be sad if it were true that us "folks" (yeehaaa!) believe we have
a right to be in the top four. It's not true of course, but don't let that
stop you, I know there's fuck all else to do in the home of the mullet and

Now now, don't get all stroppy!!
He's probably influenced by the media's perception of Newcastle as being a
'gnat's whisker off a being top four club'. Oh, and the nuggets who always

I do agree with the fact that newcastle fans in general have a complex
about being a bigger club than we currently are....but talk of unrealistic
expectations makes me cringe....so when you say the fans think they have a
right to be in the top four well I can only say that compared to the other
teams in the top 4 we have spent the same if not more money in the
transfer market over the past 10 years, have bigger crowds than liverpool
and pay some of the highest wages in the premiership and so for that YES
we expect to be challenging the teams who we are competing financially
with, unfortunatley the money has been spent badly and far too often on
players to sell tickets and get puiblicity and not for the need of the
player themselves. One thing I am impressed with Big Sam about is the
fact he has looked to strengthen the squad even with no money beign
available, he's been looking to get players in who can do a good job for
the team and not necessarily big name players..

Hahahaha - you sure know how to put us colonials in our
place.
All opinions of Mags fans posted by me in here are based on
the actual tone and content of the postings I have been
reading over the past ten years or so. Generalizations may
not apply to you personally, nor may they reflect the views
of people who don't post in here.
But then I don't get loaded up on twenty pints of broon,
squeeze into a black and white shirt that barely covers my
belly, and then smack the fat missus around before heading
down to grab some fish and chips and take a punt on some
reserves game somewhere just to get my fix :-)

I 've got mates who are Spurs fans and i lost similar bets with them
for the last 2 years- they finished ahead of us in the league. I
think Spurs will push Arse for the 4th spot this year and we should
qualify for Europe via league positions. I cant see us winning the
league cup or the FA cup as manure and chelsea will again go for these
two cups as (especially in manure's case) they wont win the CL- unless
that winker starts diving about and winning penalties in crucial
games. ;-)

That's
sad.

except we don't.
everyone else thinks thats what we expect, but a lot of us are quite
level headed.
it's not unrealistic for our fans to expect we'll be top4, after all
we were only 5 years ago, when we were withink a whisker of actually
winning the league (before it all went pear shaped)
i don't think it;s sad that allardyce is saying the easiest way to
europe next year is the carling cup, i think it's honest.

It's not true of course, but don't let that
stop you, I know there's fuck all else to do in the home of the mullet and
the check shirt.

Now now, don't get all stroppy!!
He's probably influenced by the media's perception of Newcastle as being a
'gnat's whisker off a being top four club'. Oh, and the nuggets who always
pop up on the phone-ins!!
