Ronaldinho...
Barca have confirmed they have received a £25,500,000 bid from City.

I'd snap their hand off

I fear Ron could be our new Steve Daley (who we paid £28m for in today's
money). Don't know if anyone read Phil McNulty's article on this:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/philmcnulty/2008/07/why_man_city_must_ditch_ronald.html

There's also this photo doing the rounds:

Nice tits.

I don't know what Mark Hughes is thinking. Surely half that and 1/3rd the
wages would prise David Bentley away from Blackburn.

Do you really think it's Hughes doing though? I think it's a case of like
it or lump it by Shinawatra.

Re: Ronaldinho...
From Dailymail:

City have even promised Ronaldinho, 28, the No 10 shirt, which fits in
with his R10 range with major sponsors, Nike, who would foot some of
the bill for bringing him to the Barclays Premier League.

?

Reports from Milan claimed that a deal for Ronaldinho had been agreed
with Barcelona amid suggestions that a salary of £5million-a-year had
been offered. But that is at least £100,000-a-week less than City are
prepared to pay.

Don't about that - Spurs have £17m + Robinson on the table, but I'd
certainly be a lot more excited about that as a transfer than this.

He's treating us like the five-pinter at the pub: after he's finished trying
to get into the knickers of Milan and Chelsea, he's going to settle with
what he can get. As others have pointed out - if he can't be arsed to turn
up and play for Barcelona, why would he do it for City? Almost by
definition, joining City at this stage would be an indication that he's
given up. I think it's ridiculous from a football POV and makes me despair
of the thinking of the upper echelons of the boardroom.

Moreover, what affect will it have on the other players? "I know he's fat
and way past his best, but he sells shirts so we're paying him 10 times more
than you son..."

I was about to add a "who knows - he just might join and prove everyone
wrong", but then I thought, no he won't. No point even beginning to get our
hopes up.

Or the fans get a treat playing with someone of genuine pedigree, and
Ronaldinho is more relaxed in a place where he can be left alone and
yes, probably get away with slacking off a little bit. Kind of like
Beckham in LA.

It's something different.

As a neutral observer to the situation, it'd be a pleasant surprise to
see him at City.

The price is not too much, but the wages are insane, but hey. He's
Ronaldinho.

I'd just enjoy the ride.

Unfortunately Chas, i suspect the owner looking to "enhance the brand"
in the far east is behind it.
I'd rather see the money spent on two players to improve the first
eleven. A finished article left-back or central midfielder or right
winger. I note there's no talk linking City with Bentley or SWP, perhaps
Weiss is going to be given a chance to make the position his own ahead
of someone being purchased in that position.

We all know Frank is behind this, MM, but surely this wouldn't happen if
Hughes said No. He must have clauses in his contract that say he has the
final say on player purchase and selection, indeed the article on him in
this month's City mag says as much. If a softy like Sven can say No, why
can't a hard nosed b'stard like Sparky say it too? I would have thought he's
virtually unsackable at this stage in the season. With the EUFA campaign
starting up, we need strength in depth, he knows that. As you say, 2 players
would make far more sense.

Weiss is a class act, but he still looks slight, he's got some growing to do
yet. I don't think he's physically ready, but I could very easily be wrong.
Isn't he a left footer though?

IF he does sign for shitty I wonder how many games he will play for
them.

One thing for sure, he'll be the best player on their books.

Maradona did it for Napoli, can Ronaldinho do the same for shitty?

I mean not to deride City goaty they are a grand old English club but
the modern footballer is self serving. Not like El Diego Maradona who
signed for unfashionable and unliked Napoli in the Italian league and
transformed the club.

Food for thought.

However Bentley wants to leave Blackburn in order to further his
career, so how would going to Man City address that problem ?

I would imagine Sparky is quite relieved that Ronny is not coming.
Could you imagine the size of his head in amongst the other not so
famous squad members ?

Re: Ronaldinho...
I'd agree with you about ambition if the owner said he would sanction
the spending of
£25m on two or three players for the first team squad BEFORE going after
a megastar.
A team's only as strong as it's weakest players, and our first eleven
needs some work yet.
I fear he saw the £25m purely as an investment in raising his own
profile and brand building.
The owner's put down a marker now, there's at least £25m to be spent on
top of whatever
transfer targets MH may have.

Perhaps Frank regarded the acquisition of Ron as partially self-financing,
in terms of extra revenue from ticket sales and merchandising. No Ron means
no extra revenue, hence the £25m gets shrunk.

The entire thing was a publicity stunt to coincide with City's season ticket
renewals period. Why did City's commercial director go public on a very
sensitive deal when it was (supposedly) half way through? There was never
any chance of Ronaldinho signing for City, and they well knew this. Very
cynical.

In what sense was the deal sensitive? Barca had broadcast the fact that they
wanted to get rid.

Any deal in mid-negotiation is sensitive. A (serious) buying club wouldn't
want to alert rivals in case they lose him to a higher bidder.

Only a club with no hope of landing their quarry would broadcast the fact
that they're trying to sign him.

Well you're wrong because it was AC Milan who broadcast that they wanted to
sign Ron back in April, and in the end they did. City didn't go public until
recently. There were rumours, presumably put about Ron's agent trying to up
the price, but the first confirmation I recall was AC Milan saying that they
couldn't match City's bd.

Trying to sign a player during the transfer window is suspicious, is it? Get
real.

So he went to Milan despite the fact that City bid more?

Why do you think that happened?

It just seems strange that Milan couldn't match city's bid but he still
ended up there.

Don't you think?

Well, I thought it was just an old term for 'sir'. But having looked it up,
it appears to be a mildly contemptuous form of address - so I humbly
apologise and beg your forgiveness.

I'm not sure what 'ty' means though.

Cheers anyway.
