Doh!

beat me to it.....it's about time we had a bit of good news after all this
Thaksin/Sven nonsense..

England lands extra Uefa Cup slot

England will have an additional club in next season's Uefa Cup after topping
Europe's fair play rankings.

The place will be awarded to the best-behaved Premier League team that does
not qualify for European competition next term.

Manchester City are the side who would qualify in the current Premier League
fair play standings.

City, whose final game is at Middlesbrough on Sunday, qualified for the Uefa
Cup on the same basis in 2003.

Sven-Goran Eriksson's side currently stand fifth in the fair play table,
behind Tottenham, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool - who are all
already guaranteed a place in continental competition.

This means City, with only a single league game remaining, stand on the
brink of an unexpected European spot once Uefa clarify whether this
weekend's matches count towards the final calculation.

Everton and Fulham are the other teams in contention to qualify, although
David Moyes' side will enter the Uefa Cup automatically if they get a point
against Newcastle at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Hey 'Mikey boy' !

Good to see you are still dropping in !

Personally I don't give a stuff about back door qualification for Europe -
I'd much prefer we get it my earning it during the season.

maybe the players don't want it either, hence the SH*TE we have seen since
the new year ?

Jim (cynical as ever :)

Top news....I hope you get the spot, lads n' ladies. You'd deserve it. And
Sven should get a lot of the credit for this, even if it is via the fair
play system.

Good luck!

I'll happily take a fair play place. Not quite as good as getting a 'good
football' place, but you still have to earn a slot based on merit. We've
played mostly clean football and Sven should be given credit for that.

On Radio Manc yesterday the view was that we would need pretty much the
whole team sent off for Fulham to be able to overtake us. I hope they're
right.

No surprises to me Chas.
Just shows how worthless it is to get into Europe by this route anyway.

you get into Europe comps by merit surely ? thereby having a decent chance
to progress.

I agree with your sentiments Jimbo but it's been such a shitty few weeks
that I'll take any crumbs of comfort that may come our way. At the end of
the day, whatever your opinion on the matter, there's one EUFA cup place
going up for grabs. Now if you could decide who gets it, would you really
give it to another club?

I think I would - I still feel the pain of when we last 'qualified' via
this route.
when clearly not ready for European Football - the same would probably
happen , and I am not too keen on revisiting those emotions again !

this news has really pissed me off!

how can a team fail in the league by soooooo much and then be rewarded with
a place in a very very good cup competition?
date: Sun, 18 May 2008 08:43:53 +0100   author:   goaty

Re: UEFA Cup
You say fail in the league, i say finish ninth.
Portsmouth are in just because they beat utd and a load of championship
sides, we finished only two points behind them and took four points off
them. Are they any more deserving of a place than us?
City meet one of the criteria necessary for entry into the UEFA Cup,
enjoy it.
