Gareth Barry
Why doesn't he really put the skids on and "buy out his contract" with
Villa. Is it too late for him to do that this season?
Sure they could leave him hanging whilst it went through the courts
challenging the length of his contract........but Villa would get nothing
from him because he couldn't play for them, do you leave a player of 10
years service to rot like that? Good luck on any new signings, lol. Barry
surely has a contract of 4 years (being with Villa for 10 years.....and this
is the legal bit, whether an extention is a contract or just an extension).
Call their bluff and Villa will live by the sword or fall into line like any
other wank club.

Contracts in football aren't worth the paper they are written on.

A few years ago clubs would do business it was the way, players move on
etc. get him to sign a new contract knowing he may be sold but you get
more for him that way. Now it seems that clubs are getting greedy and
very selfish. There doesn't seem to be a mid-point anymore. Some clubs
(eg Pompey) offer small amounts for a player who is worth a lot more say
£5 million for a £8-9 million rated player where as other very
reasonable offers are made and the selling club gets stupid and whacks a
silly price on the player. Villa insisting on £18 million is daft, and
what's more if they do lose him at the last moment they'll have sod all
time to replace him with the money they do get.

I wouldn't go that far, but signing him is not really a step forward IMO

He's ahead of Hargreaves and Carrick in the England setup.
He's good. He's just not a spectacular type of player, but he's rock
solid.
He'd be an essential swap for Alonso, I see him being brought in with
an eye towards covering the left-side too.

Says a lot about the 'England setup'

You need spectacular. You already have shitloads of decent/good solid
players. All top 10 teams have good solid players. In a title challenging
team good solid players should be backup. You need to buy top class to
compete. I just don't see how buying Barry and selling Alonso will take
Liverpool anywhere.

Compared to Evra, Clichy and Ashley Cole he is miles behind in that
position. He is ok, but making him a main target is lack of ambition in my
view.

Do you like the Bentley link? Villa apparently have offered 15m, and
Spurs want him bad too. Spurs have added Dos Santos and Modric (some
saying he's overrated) already, and if they add Bentley it'll be an
impressive addition of offensive firepower - especially if they hold
onto Berbatov who you lot appear after (why not get Santa Cruz
instead? Berbatov would start sulking when he wasn't playing).
He's not a Ronaldo or anything but I can't remember the last time we
had a wide midfielder who crossed, provided assists and was a scoring
threat (all three).
Babel looks like he'll be good though.

I think Spurs have bought well. Dos Santos will be a revelation in a season
or two. Just need loads of matches. Modric is great. Very young but already
a certain starter for Croatia in midfield. Had some great games at Euro 08.
I think Bentley is a great player and I'd much rather have him than Barry.
Age is also an issue here. But it seems like Rafa won't buy players for the
first team unless they are over 27.

No doubt. He just needs to play play play. That's the only way the young
players will make it. Remember how nobody really thought Ronaldo was going
to be the next big thing a couple of years ago. I'm not saying Babel will
equal Ronaldo but he definately has a lot of potential. Same with Nani by
the way :-)

They've already bought Sidwell to replace him

Gerrard and Kuyt as the "3" worked surprisingly well, and Kuyt played
better towards the end of the season, enough that he broke into the
Dutch starting team (and played well to boot).
However, what Bentley brings that nobody else at this time does is
genuine width and crossing. No reason why he can't start with Kuyt as
an option of the bench or for "Rotation".
Other attacking names I've seen us linked with (the ones with enough
credibility are): Robbie Keane (hmm), Riera (ugh), Downing (ugh) and
Milner (for the love of God, WTF?).

Huh?
Our last new four signings that are starters were aged 22, 23, 23 and
20 at the time of their purchase.

I'm a little wary of Iberian and South American players to be honest.
If they get good Madrid and Barca start getting horny and whacking
off. Endless transfer sagas. Watch Barca come in with a BIG bid
for Torres next summer.
