OT: Internet bullying...
Following on (though not related) to Lawrence's post about spam.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4805760.stm
And the Institute for public policy research:-
"ippr's report cites evidence that identifies seven types of cyber-bullying,
ranging from abusive text messages, e-mails and phone calls to bullying in
internet chatrooms, social networking sites and instant messaging. It says
that up to one in five pupils in London schools have experienced some form
of cyber-bullying and that the psychological impact was similar to or worse
than traditional bullying, partly because it allows the bully to accost the
victim outside of school hours. And worryingly, a third of victims had never
told an adult about the problem: in 2005 just four percent said that their
child had been bullied online."
I find this whole trend of 'cyber-bullying' quite disturbing. Not the fact
that the bullying happens to kids - That's a by-product of human society.
Just the fact that as a race embracing a new mass form of communication has
comes at a cost to some that are vulnerable. In the early days of net chat
it was perceived as a way of communicating with others in a more impersonal
way and therefore relatively risk free. But now, we've got death-threats
suicides and attempted suicides.
Sad, very sad...

It is a problem as you know I can get quite agitated and angry on the
rare occasion this however is in response to some of the sheer nasty
very personel insults that can fly around things that you would never
say to someones face . As for me would never dream of making those
types of remarks in the first place. So tempers can flare.
I've recently been at it with PMD it finally got down to personally
insulting threatening emails and as usual things can get quite nasty.
The last mail I received from him after I insisted if he wanted to
meet me that he gives me his address was PMD saying he wouldn't put
his home and partner at risk. I have to say that made me feel quite
sick that it had come to this and the thought that he felt that I
could be that sort of person was very concerning. That was it I
thought enough is enough. However on the over side of the coin when
you look at some of the stuff that scoopex has said about RD's cancer
well it does go beyond the pale and if he said those things face face
we'd all justify RD or anyone smacking him in the gob.

Reactions from other newsgroups posters are different in every context -
Heated debate occurs in lots of ng's. This is particularly true of rival
footy groups. I've no got no love for Man Utd as a team, or many other teams
for that matter, but if my emnity (and believe it or not it sometimes is)
reduced me to a level of threats of violence or disgusting insults about
someones afflictions or handicaps I'd be whole heartedly ashamed and deserve
to be castigated. Of course, i'll take the piss - god knows as a Leeds fan
I've received enough piss-taking over the last 4 years, but it's when taking
the piss crosses the line that bothers me. Certain posters such as RD can
cause adverse reactions, and we've had a couple of run-ins in the past - but
i think he'd be the first to agree that i fight fire with fire, not fire
with insults and threats.

I get your point. Anonymity can be used as a shield for cowards. However, RD
whilst an annoying fucker :) does have an ability to wind folks up without
resorting to threats and insults. Yes RD can talk shite a lot of the time
(my opinion) but i'd never advocate he stopped posting or blocking him.

I've blocked everyone who annoys me, and i can tell you it's fucking heaven,
i don't need to be wound up over a frigging newsgroup, it's not real life,
it's a fucking cyber world, i also block those silly CUNTS who reply to the
weirdos and freaks, even 2 of my fellow leeds fans are on my blocked list
for replying to the arseholes, liverpool fans have enough intelligence to
block the very people who ruined thier once good newsgroup. they had the
intelligence to stop buying the sun newspaper for ruining thier reputations,
but not blocking people who sully it once more. i used to post on thier
group a lot a cople of years ago, even wishing them luck in the CL final,
but last year i was hoping and praying they'd lose, for no other reason than
having to read the several freaks who post on thier newsgroup, giving the
impression that liverpool fans really are the scummiest cunts in the
country. since i blocked those piss stained little kids, i'm slowly getting
to like reading the group once again, until someone new replies to them
causing me to read thier posts. then it's more in the bucket.
