OT: Vista
Looking for some advice on Vista for anyone who's got it or had it. MY
sister has only gone and stuck it on her pc and i'm struggling to connect
it to the net. I can get connected to the router (although not to the web
page part) and it appears to be downloading updates but it won't let me on
to any webpages.

Any ideas?

Vista seems to be a bit of a pain in the backside, cant wait for service
pack 2. I had problems mapping a drive on my old XP machine with my new
Vista one. It showed up in the network map but i couldnt connect to it.
After trying loads of different things, it turned out that it was the subnet
on the network card that was different on the Vista machine, one machine,
the xp one, was showing 255.255.255.0 and the other was 255.255.0.0
I dont know whether you use dhcp or manually assign your machines ip but it
might be worth a try having a look at the cards properties just in case.

Could also just be a simple firewall problem, you could try shutting down
the windows based one and any other one you have installed one at a time to
see if that makes any difference. I had Zonealarm free edition installed and
although i could browse the net etc it wouldnt allow me to run ccXgui as a
server to stream films etc to my xbox from my pc, worked fine when i
disabled it though. I even gave the ccXgui server rights in Zonealarm but
still no joy. I had to eventually do a complete clean uninstall of Zonealarm
and then reinstall it. Worked fine after that.

It's not the browser security settings is it?

Tried that. Even put google webpage in my trusted sites as well with
everything turned to low, still nothing. The more i read up on it the
more i'm glad i'm still on XP. Seems as though loads of people have had
problems connecting to the net with vista. Quite a lot of it stems from
the IPv6 protocol but i turned that off.

I'll probably just end up telling her to buy XP. Its not as expensive as
it was.

was tempted to download firefox or opera with this pc and install it onto
hers but think there is more to this than that (although will give it a
shot). Although i said it downloads updates it appears to be very slow
when doing it. Not sure if this is just a vista thing or linked to the
problem.

Apparently there has been a recent 'silent' update to IE7 which has caused a
few folk (including myself) to have problems connecting.
Its not so much connecting, as it will still show as connected to the
internet (hence why you can download Win updates) but it cannot negotiate
past DNS or something.

After having this problem and trying all sorts of various diagnostics and
command lines with the very helpful "George" on the BT Broadband technical
help line, I managed to get it sorted out with a simple settings change.

I'm on XP and have never used a Vista machine, so you'll have to work out
where these settings are on your version of stuff.

Basically the update changed network and hub settings to a manual
configuration.
All you have to do is plonk it back onto Automatic detection, close IE and
then open it again.

Here its:
Internet Options>Connections>Lan Settings> Check "Automatically detect
settings" and leave the rest unchecked.

Worked for me and a few other people I know had the same issue - It *may*
have been a BT issue where the settings have been over-ridden for whatever
reason. Worth having a look to see if your auto settings are on though.

Did that already. for some reason i always check this first, must have
happened to me in the past. :-)

I'll try another browser and pass it back to her. She can stop being so
cheap and put it into a shop and let them figure it out. :-)
