Decade of Dominance
CELTIC have officially been declared as the most successful club in the
10-year history of the SPL.
Since the inception of the new league set-up in season 1998/99, Celtic have
lifted the SPL title on no fewer than six occasions, with Martin O'Neill and
Gordon Strachan guiding the Hoops to three championships each.
In addition, Celtic have twice lost out on the title on the final day of the
league season, in 2002/03 and 2004/05, by the narrowest of margins.
Official statistics released by the league show that Celtic have played 376
games in the SPL, winning 280 of those fixtures and amassing a total of 891
points.
Rangers trail in second place, with 256 wins from 376 games. Hearts are
third on the all-time list with 156 wins from 376 games.
Celtic are also the highest-scoring team in the history of the SPL. The
Hoops have found the net an impressive 888 times in 10 years. Rangers have
scored 799 goals.
The Hoops have also conceded the least amount of goals, 303, in the last 10
years. Rangers have let in 305 goals. Hearts have conceded 450 times.
Former Celtic striker Henrik Larsson is the top scorer in the history of the
SPL with 158 goals. John Hartson bagged a total of 88 SPL goals, Scott
McDonald has 67 strikes to his name, while Chris Sutton (63), Derek Riordan
(59) and Stilian Petrov (55) also feature in the top 10 list of scorers.
Larsson scored a staggering 12 SPL hat-tricks for Celtic and topped the
scoring charts in five of the last 10 seasons. Mark Viduka, Hartson and
McDonald have also finished as the top scorer in the SPL over the last
decade.
In terms of individual honours, Celtic stars, past and present, dominate the
Player of the Year awards over the last 10 years.
Larsson (twice), Viduka, Sutton, Hartson, Shaun Maloney, Shunsuke Nakamura
and Aiden McGeady have all been named as the SPFA Player of the Year, while
Larsson (twice), Paul Lambert, Jackie McNamara, Hartson and Nakamura were
named as Player of the Year by the Scottish Football Writers.
Celtic also hold the records for most points won in a season 103 in
2001/02 and most goals scored in a season 105 in 2003/04. Overall, it
has been a decade of dominance.

Nae bother. It's certainly a Pravdaesque article but there's little
arguement about Celtic's recent success...
