The following was a question on the radio; what premier team was top at
Christmas and got relegated the same season. I did not here the answer and
can not find out the team. Any help?

Possibly Norwich in 1994-95. Skyjam will know.

Nah, Norwich sunk like a stone after Christmas but they weren't top.
Blackburn led pretty much the whole way in 94-95. Plus, I have a
vivid recollection of Jon Newsome doing an interview on the day
Norwich got relegated (possibly at Elland Road), saying they had
been in the top 6 at the turn of the year.

Even though it preceded the PL, my guess would be Millwall. Last
time, they were in the top flight (late 80s/early 90s), they went from
"surprisingly very good" to "unbelievably shit" in the second half of
the season.

Yeah, I thought about Millwall, and also Man City in the season after they
won the title, but then discounted these on the basis of the words 'the
premier league', and the annoying trend in recent years to assume that all
football started in 1992.

If it is post-1992, then I'm not sure it actually happened.

It's certainly more likely to have happened during 2 points for a win, when
the gap between top and bottom was less.

I think you'd have to look right back in time to "2 points for a win"
(pre 1981) to find the culprit. Surely every team at the top at
Christmas already has a survival points haul at Christmas?

It does have the whiff of something that Man City would do, but I think
all the City fans I work with who delight in relating the ridiculous
things that have happened to their team might have mentioned it.
Millwall is a good shout, but I think it might be Carlisle - they
certainly went down in their only season in the top flight and I'm sure
they topped the table at one point.

Shit, reminds me I need to ask him what happened to all those Gers
dropouts. I think they have Stevie Thompson and Ian Murray, probably some
more. Who's their manager again?
That's if Skytoes is not too busy playing on his Xbox to watch football
anyway.
