academic now, isn't he? 'Death and the Maiden' is one hell of a song.

I've known Grant Smithies for a long time, he's been a Nelson resident 
for a bit longer than I have. We met at Everyman's music shop in central 
Nelson and he used to come round to nod heads to some Os tunes and

Yes, he's Dr Downes now I think? He teaches at Otago University in 
Dunedin (of course), you can do a Rock Major with your Bachelor of Music 
with Downes heading the course. Actually in the book, he does a beautiful 
breakdown of the chord progressions in The Clean's 'Don't Point That 
Thing at Me' (surely one of the greatest NZ tunes of all time). The year 
I started university in the early '80s, as part of capping week The Clean 
played in Christchurch's Cathedral Square to a small but enthusiastic 
crowd and a load of bemused onlookers wondering what it was all about. 
They did a 15 minute version of DPTTAM that was off the planet, just 
stunning and seemed to go on and on spiralling almost out of control and 
coming back each time in a huge lovely wall off sound. Tremendous stuff.
