Cricket - the gentle sport....
It has never been like this!!!!
2 Hawthorn v Geelong VFL grand final, 1989
Think of the 1989 grand final and wince. It still hurts two decades
later. At the first bounce Dermott Brereton was crunched so hard he
collapsed and was doubled-over vomiting while the Cats' Gary Ablett Sr
kicked the second goal. Dermott refused to leave the field and kicked
Hawthorn's first. By half time Hawthorn was six goals up, but Johnny
Platten was concussed, Robert DiPierdomenico was rattling after a
clash with Ablett (he kept playing with broken ribs and a punctured
lung) and Michael Tuck split the webbing of his hand. Geelong's Steve
Hocking played on with a split testicle and his brother Garry was
knocked out. By the last quarter the Hawks had no fit players on the
bench, six injured players on the field and a five-goal lead. There
was blood in the water. Geelong and Ablett got a sniff and the
legendary forward piled on the goals, finishing with nine, a record,
but Geelong fell one short. At least six players spent grand final
night in hospital.

I find it hard to imagine by Hayden's triple century against Zimbabwe
deserved a place on the list. I guess one has to be Australian to
understand.

The statement "no Australian, Bradman included, has ever compiled so many
runs in a Test match" is not even true, although Greg Chappell and Mark
Taylor both took two innings to do it.
I suppose a moment is a pretty good approximation to how long Hayden held
the world record.

I wouldn't have most of those moments there. I don't know that Lara's record
the first time around was any more of a great shakes than Hayden's- at least
there was a result in the Zimbabwe match.
And I would include Waugh's 200 in Jamaica against an extremely hostile
Ambrose as probably his finest innings.

Well, Lara's 375 was made against the same attack that England fielded the
previous week, when they beat WI by 208 runs. OTOH, the Antigua Rec was one
of the highest-scoring Test grounds in the world.
